Just after 9 AM on August 16th in Korean time, BLACKPINK’s Lisa surprised fans with the release of her second solo music video of 2024, “New Woman”. This highly anticipated project features a collaboration between Lisa and Grammy-winning Spanish singer Rosalía, coming just one month after her hit single “ROCKSTAR”.
In the posters and MV teasers that were unveiled, Lisa stunned fans with her bold new visuals, and the full MV continued to surprise viewers with its imaginative approach, from the setting to Lisa’s wardrobe, providing a stark juxtaposition to her previous solo projects.
Lisa’s song “New Woman”captures the essence of the Y2K era’s nostalgic Pop-Punk sound. In contrast to her previous song “ROCKSTAR,””New Woman”is a visual feast with numerous outfits and scenes, showcasing a diverse range of looks.
The message of “woman power”that was prevalent in “ROCKSTAR”is further emphasized in “New Woman”. In fact, some fans were able to pick up on subtle clues about the number of upcoming MVs and the album title within the music video.
Despite being praised for her solo in “New Woman,” Rosalía has also faced criticism for it feeling out of place and causing a disjointed shift in rhythm that left listeners feeling disconnected. There were even some who believed her solo seemed like a separate song that had been added into the MV. However, when Lisa and Rosalía sing together later on, the song regains its flow and harmony.
In general, this MV release reveals a different aspect of Lisa that has yet to be seen by her fans, and can be considered as a musical exploration.
Despite this, the combination of Lisa and Rosalía’s voices results in a more harmonious and catchy song, demonstrating their strong chemistry.
