Revolver Director on Ji Chang-wook’s Performance and Presence Beyond the Script

On August 1st, a conversation took place with Director Oh Seung-wook at a café in Samcheong-dong, Seoul, where he shared insights about his film “Revolver”.

“The plot of “Revolver”centers around Soo-young (portrayed by Jeon Do-yeon), a former police officer who was wrongly convicted and imprisoned. Upon her release, she relentlessly pursues a singular objective.”

Oh Seung-wook explained his decision to cast Lim Ji-yeon as Jung Yoon-sun by stating, “After seeing her powerful acting in ‘The Glory’ and her impressive performance in ‘Obsessed’, I knew she was the perfect fit for the role.”

Upon meeting Lim Ji-yeon, the director expressed his desire to showcase a different side of her, one that had not been seen in her previous roles in “Obsessed”or “The Glory”. He explained that he saw the dynamic between her character, Jung Yoon-sun, and Ha Soo-young as similar to that of Batman and Robin, where they were equal partners rather than a master and servant. This was the reason behind his comparison.

The director explained that he chose Lim Ji-yeon for her exceptional acting abilities, and he had high hopes for her to stand out in the film. As she arrived on set for the first day of shooting, the wind suddenly picked up and perfectly swept her hair, setting the scene beautifully.

Oh Seung-wook commented on Ji Chang-wook’s portrayal of Andy, stating that while Andy may exude strength and expertise in the bars and conference rooms of Gangnam, his loss of power and wealth renders him virtually invisible.

He elaborated, stating that in his attempts to recover what he had lost, he became ensnared in his own errors and continued to spiral downwards as Ha Soo-young continuously defeated him. This ultimately led him to resort to borrowing money and hiring inexperienced gangsters on credit.

Upon witnessing Ji Chang-wook’s performance, Oh Seung-wook expressed admiration by stating, “Ji Chang-wook’s portrayal of the character went beyond what was written in the script. The meticulous nuances he displayed in the scene where he arrives in a wheelchair in the mountains were truly remarkable.”

In addition, he joked about his great rapport with Ji Chang-wook, saying, “Ji Chang-wook’s performance was flawless from beginning to end. It was almost as if I could have carried him on my back all the way to the coast of Sokcho.”

Despite not being the intended actor for the role of Andy, the director recognized that Ji Chang-wook’s performance greatly heightened the character’s impact and ultimately elevated the performances of the rest of the cast.

The release date for “Revolver”has been scheduled for August 7th.
