The episode opens with Subaru regaining his composure following yet another revival through his Return by Death ability. As he prepares to express gratitude to his allies, he’s haunted by the memory of Sin Archbishop Sirius Romanée-Conti thanking an unsuspecting crowd before ruthlessly eliminating them. As Liliana Masquerade continued her speech, Subaru recognized that his reset point was mere moments before Sirius’ vicious scheme would unfold.

Initially, Subaru intended to have Beatrice accompany him, but he recalled the intense pursuit Emilia endured at the hands of Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti in Season 1. Thus, he opted for Beatrice to stay with Emilia for her safety while he confronted Sirius alone. Emilia objected with concerns for his safety, but Subaru assured her he would look after her.

In this episode, Subaru made his way into the clock tower and ascended in search of Lusbel, but found no sign of Sirius. Just then, their eyes glowed red as Sirius emerged behind them, unleashing her abilities. She commended Subaru’s kindness before ensnaring him with her chain-like weapon, which he attempted to remove only to find his fingers severed by its razor-sharp chains.

Sirius expressed her gratitude and offered apologies while delivering a monologue about kindness and love. As the situation escalated, it became evident that her powers amplify emotions and sensations between her targets, extending even to physical injuries. During this turmoil, Subaru voiced his fear of death, reminding himself that this fear reaffirmed his humanity. Sirius likewise raved about fear and other emotions, leading to Subaru’s death once again.

Following that, Subaru revived through Return by Death, more determined than ever to secure assistance against Sirius. He concluded that Reinhard van Astrea would be the ideal ally. Subaru then convinced Rachins to summon Reinhard, emphasizing the forthcoming threat posed by members of the Witch’s Cult.

Rachins activated a signal in the sky to attract Reinhard’s attention, yet the timing was unfortunate. Sirius made her grand announcement to the crowd, thanking Rachins for diverting their focus on her. Subaru also fell under her influence, mirroring the earlier sequence of events.

However, just in time, Reinhard burst onto the scene, breaking both Rachins and Subaru free from Sirius’ enchantment. Subaru quickly briefed Reinhard on the circumstances, while Sirius recognized him as the Master Swordsman. Without hesitation, Reinhard plunged into combat, launching a relentless assault against her. Meanwhile, Subaru managed to rescue Lusbel as Reinhard nearly incapacitated Sirius amid the crowd’s chants for her demise, still subjected to her spell.

Realizing something was amiss, Subaru sensed danger as Reinhard prepared to deliver the final blow to Sirius. Tragically, he succumbed to her magic once more, leading to a catastrophic outcome where both Sirius and the crowd, including Reinhard, appeared to be bisected despite Reinhard’s apparent resilience to her Witch Factor.

In this episode, Subaru once again revived through Return by Death, visibly frustrated and disturbed by Reinhard’s unexpected defeat. He then opted to take Beatrice along for a shopping trip, which led her to sense that something was awry. Priscilla Barielle also identified the underlying tension as Subaru began explaining the events to Beatrice, who accepted his judgment without hesitation.

Subaru elaborated on Sirius’ powers that involve transmitting feelings and sensations, rendering individuals incapable of perceiving threats. Furthermore, any injuries she endured were mirrored by everyone under her spell. Beatrice contended that collaborating with Reinhard was futile, asserting that his powers rendered her ineffective, as all mana surrounding him was obedient to his will.

The episode revealed Beatrice’s suggestion of employing Shamac to negate the spell’s effects on the afflicted individuals, enabling Sirius to be defeated without endangering others. At this moment, Emilia approached, apologizing for not adhering to Subaru’s wishes. She conveyed that Priscilla warned her the regrets of inaction would linger if she delayed her pursuit of Subaru. He attempted to urge her to retreat, but his plea was in vain.

Emilia insisted that whenever Subaru enters combat, she must stand with him, regardless of the reasons, as her desire to protect him matched his own. Subaru relented but cautioned her to prioritize her safety given the Witch’s Cult’s obsession with her. At that point, Sirius manifested atop the clock tower, triggering an immediate retaliatory assault from Emilia utilizing her ice magic.

Nevertheless, Beatrice observed that Shamac would be ineffective against Sirius due to the spiritual nature of her power. This realization coincided with the nearby citizens remaining ensnared by the spell, unaffected by Emilia’s assault. Furious at Emilia’s interference, Sirius leapt down, revealing an unexpected rage. Subaru noticed this new emotional display from her. Through her tirade, it became apparent that Petelgeuse was her spouse, and she was infuriated with Emilia for “stealing” and ending his life. The ensuing battle depicted Emilia not only defending herself but pushing Sirius back. The episode reached its climax with Sirius retaliating against Emilia, only for Regulus Corneas to intervene just in time to save her and “retrieve” her.

In Conclusion

Overall, Re:ZERO Season 3 Episode 2 centered on elaborating Sirius’ abilities and the complications they introduce. The episode also illustrated that even Reinhard may fall victim to her powers, raising concerns as Emilia became more entangled in the conflict with Sirius. It is evident that both Sirius and Regulus harbor ulterior motives for Emilia that will unfold throughout the remainder of the season.
