Rings of Power reveals Slow Horses star as Sauron in shocking Season 2 scene

Charlie Vickers will reprise his role as the titular Lord of the Rings in Rings of Power, however, a different actor will portray Sauron in Season 2.

The first season concluded with a shocking revelation: Halbrand, known as the ruler of the Southlands, was revealed to be none other than Sauron in disguise.

As the darkness continues to spread across Middle-earth and a major battle in Lord of the Rings is confirmed, Rings of Power Season 2 will focus on the Dark Lord’s main objective: persuading Celebrimbor to create the remaining rings – seven for the Dwarf-lords, nine for mortal men, and the One Ring.

After Morgoth’s defeat, the second season will revisit the aftermath and take audiences back to the time period 1,000 years prior to Season 1 before we return to the forge.

Unfortunately, Vickers will not be making an appearance. Instead, the role of this previous version of Sauron will be portrayed by Jack Lowden, known for his work in Slow Horses, Fighting with My Family, and Dunkirk.

According to an interview with Total Film, Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne shared that the opening scene of season 2 for Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power begins in darkness with an orc entering, revealing a massive gathering of thousands of orcs.

“Just as he was about to be crowned and present his vision for Middle-earth, his trusted advisor Adar unexpectedly turned against him, flipping the crown upside down and delivering a fatal blow. This act of betrayal was the ultimate downfall of Sauron, known as the assassination of the once-great ruler.”

It’s important to keep in mind that Sauron is not only known as the Lord of the Rings, but also as a skilled shapeshifter. He is not a human, but rather a Maia – a spiritual being created by the Valar – with the ability to alter his form and manipulate reality at his whim.

We will witness Vickers in his Halbrand appearance, as well as in his guise as Annatar, the self-proclaimed “Lord of Gifts”who deceives Celebrimbor into creating rings at his otherworldly command.

“According to McKay, Sauron holds the center of gravity in the show. While it is an ensemble, his presence is becoming increasingly dominant and he is the one driving all the action.”
