Marc Merrill, the co-founder of Riot Games, recently addressed claims that the Netflix series “Arcane”resulted in significant financial losses for the company. Contrary to those reports, Merrill asserted that from Riot’s perspective, the series has been a resounding success.
While the second season of “Arcane”has garnered widespread acclaim and solid reviews, some financial assessments have suggested it did not perform as well financially. Sources, including Variety, revealed that the production of the full 18-episode series cost Riot Games around $250 million, as they financed the project independently. This choice earned the studio considerable goodwill among fans and earned a number of awards, but concerns over profitability emerged.
The absence of a confirmed third season fueled speculation regarding these financial issues, leading to assumptions that the reported losses were behind the decision. However, Riot’s future plans appear robust, including multiple new animated projects resembling the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To further clarify, Merrill took to Reddit, dismissing these negative perceptions.
Merrill Declares Arcane “Crushed”
In light of Bloomberg’s analysis describing the show as a financial setback, a Riot Games representative indicated that the second season is projected to “at least break even.” Merrill echoed this statement, emphasizing that critics with a “short-term, transactional, cynical lens” often misunderstand the company’s values.
He expressed frustration over public perceptions that assume Riot creates content solely to sell in-game items, stating, “These people think we make things like Arcane to sell skins, when in reality we sell skins to make things like Arcane.” Merrill portrayed Riot as a mission-driven entity, committed to enhancing the player experience and engagement.
While acknowledging that Riot is not infallible, he stressed that their primary aim extends beyond immediate profits. “We are not focused on the short-term extraction of profits,” Merrill stated, reiterating the company’s dedication to creating lasting value for its audience.
“To be clear, Arcane crushed for players, and so it crushed for us,” he concluded, asserting positive outcomes from the show’s impact on their community.

In a subsequent response to a player, Merrill assured that “Arcane” had generated sufficient profit for Riot. Although the specifics in terms of revenue remain unspecified, the enthusiasm displayed indicates that Riot is content with the animated series and plans to continue its endeavors in this medium.
