Riot Games, the developer behind League of Legends, has hinted at an upcoming real-life trading card game, as revealed in a recent video shared on the Chinese social media platform Bilibili.
Since its launch, League of Legends has evolved significantly. It started with just 40 champions but has expanded to feature over 160 champions, along with numerous items, game modes, and a plethora of cosmetics.
Riot Games has also experienced immense growth, elaborating their portfolio to encompass various titles across multiple genres.
The latest buzz is that Riot may be entering the trading card game market, following the release of a video on Bilibili.
According to the notable leaker Big Bad Bear, an in-real-life trading card game titled “Rune Battleground” is in the works for League of Legends enthusiasts. The video showcases various icons that morph into the beloved champions of the game, converging into a card held by a player.
This isn’t Riot’s first foray into card games. Their previous attempt, Legends of Runeterra, transitioned the MOBA into a digital card game format, allowing players to earn cards through weekly challenges and a region-based battle pass without a trading market.
In contrast, a physical trading card game would represent a new direction for Riot, providing opportunities for monetization and the possibility of introducing card rarities, which could significantly increase collectible values.
As the teaser has just emerged, details about the new game remain sparse, but updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
