A couple of blade-wielding robbers are accused of stealing $68,000 worth of Pokémon and other trading cards from an office in Osaka, Japan.
Pokémon card-related crimes have surged in recent years, with thieves stealing millions of dollars in collectibles in several high-profile heists.
The latest incident occurred in Osaka, where two robbers reportedly broke into a company specializing in trading cards.
According to Sora News, on September 9 at 3:30 AM, two masked thieves entered the building after employees had finished a livestream and threatened them with bladed instruments.
Although the robbers were not informed about which cards were the most valuable, they allegedly tied the employees to their chairs and demanded, “Which ones are the expensive ones, huh?” in a Kansai accent.
The employees directed the criminals to 100 cards valued at approximately 10 million yen, equating to around $68,000.
Even after revealing the cards to take, the employees remained tied up with duct tape over their mouths for two hours before eventually freeing themselves and contacting the authorities.
Numerous Pokémon card crimes have occurred over the years.
The victims described the thieves as dressed in black, wearing masks and sunglasses to conceal their identities. The suspects remain unidentified and at large.
This incident marks just one of many Pokémon card robberies, and it likely won’t be the last. Earlier in 2024, thieves were caught on camera stealing 35,000 Pokémon cards. Additionally, a collector in Belgium was devastated when his $200,000 collection was stolen by suspects using Wi-Fi jammers and headsets.
In another instance from 2022, a 62-year-old had his $500,000 Pokémon card collection, which included unopened boxes and rare Japanese editions, stolen from his home.
