Robert Downey Jr will obviously take off his Doctor Doom mask

Despite being one of the few Marvel villains who does not remove his mask, it is evident that Robert Downey Jr. will break this tradition in his portrayal of Doctor Doom.

Marvel officially announced at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con that Downey will be reprising his role in the MCU. He is set to appear as Doctor Doom in the highly anticipated Avengers 5.

Downey is no stranger to portraying characters from comic books who wear masks. He spent over a decade donning Iron Man’s iconic helmet. However, it is widely known that Doctor Doom rarely takes off his metal faceplate.

Despite the belief of some Marvel fans that Downey will stay true to this aspect of the character, it appears highly probable that both the actor and Marvel Studios are determined to avoid this trait in order to give Downey more screen time.

During his time in university, Victor Von Doom engaged in a bitter rivalry with Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four. In his attempt to outdo Richards, Victor sustained significant facial injuries while constructing a machine.

Victor’s experiment gone wrong resulted in the loss of his spot in school and triggered his lifelong animosity towards Reed, which drove his eventual transformation into the villainous Doctor Doom.

Marvel Comics has consistently portrayed Victor’s injuries in varying degrees of severity, from a minor facial scar that his dysmorphia exaggerates (Fantastic Four #278) to a severe disfigurement with missing facial features (Secret Wars #3).

Regardless of his true appearance, Doctor Doom consistently dons his metal mask, giving him the confidence to carry out his nefarious deeds. It is extremely uncommon for him to ever remove it.

Many fans are convinced that Marvel Studios will continue this long-standing tradition now that Downey has taken on the role.

A fan expressed their thoughts on the possibility of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man encountering a villainous version of Tony Stark by commenting on the post, stating “Peter won’t have a chance to see anything, as Doom never reveals his face.”

Despite this, Downey remains Marvel’s most recognizable figure as he was the one who initiated the MCU in 2008, solidifying himself as the most closely linked person to the franchise.

It is inconceivable that the studio would not take advantage of this opportunity and feature Downey’s face as much as possible, even if it goes against Doctor Doom’s established backstory.

One fan pointed out that in the movie, the MCU will give him a biotech mask, but he will only wear it for 5% of the time.

One person concisely explained that the notion of Downey constantly wearing the Doom mask is unrealistic: “They cast RDJ as Doom for a reason. He will definitely remove his mask frequently.”
