Roblox is experiencing a notable shift in its player demographics, particularly with an increase in older users. At the 2024 Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), the company disclosed that 58% of its 79.5 million daily active users are now aged 13 or older. This signifies a remarkable 26% year-over-year growth in that age group for Q2 2024, altering the platform’s user base significantly.
David Baszucki, CEO of Roblox, highlighted in a news post the impact of this expanding age group on the future of the platform. He stated, “When Erik Cassel and I founded Roblox in 2006, we were driven by a question that still guides us today: How do humans connect through play?”Baszucki reaffirmed the company’s commitment to global expansion, enhancing experiences for all age groups, and developing Roblox’s in-game economy.
This is not the first instance of Roblox reporting an increase in older players. In 2023, the platform indicated that 55% of its users were over 13, with the 17-24 age group being the fastest-growing segment. With over half of its player base now comprising those aged 13 and older, Roblox is intensifying its focus on this audience.
A key addition for this older demographic is the new Roblox Party feature, designed to enhance group play and communication. This tool will enable users 9 and older to gather and enjoy various Roblox experiences together. Additionally, users aged 13 and above with phone-verified accounts will gain access to voice chat, facilitating better communication during gameplay. The text chat feature is set to launch by the end of the year, with voice chat soon to follow.
As Roblox evolves, it increasingly sheds its image as a platform solely for children. The platform is adapting to serve a diverse audience interested in gaming, socializing, and creative projects.
