Roblox Targets 100-Player Games with Improved Performance

Roblox is focusing on enhancing support for high-performance, 100-player games — even on budget-friendly devices. At the 2024 Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), the company outlined its strategy to optimize performance across the platform, ensuring that experiences such as battle royales, sports games, and open-world adventures can run smoothly on devices equipped with just 2GB of RAM.

“We’re going to make it possible for a developer to host a high-performance, 100-player open world, sports or battle royale-type game on Roblox and have it run on 2 GB RAM devices anywhere in the world at good frame rates. We won’t stop until this is possible,”stated David Baszucki, Founder and CEO announced.

This emphasis on performance follows considerable enhancements made earlier this year. Roblox has been refining its platform by shortening app launch times, boosting streaming efficiency, and decreasing crash incidents, particularly on Windows. According to Baszucki, there has been a noteworthy 64% decline in crash rates across all devices.

To advance these initiatives, Roblox unveiled Harmony at RDC2024. Harmony optimizes the platform’s management of CPU and GPU usage as well as RAM and bandwidth on both client and server sides. It ensures that players on all device types enjoy the best experience possible.

Roblox is also exploring the future with AI-driven creation tools. The company showcased a project that enables developers to create 3D content using text, video, or even 3D prompts.

“We envision a powerful future where Roblox experiences will have extensive generative AI capabilities to facilitate real-time creation integrated with gameplay,”Baszucki remarked. These tools will be built to operate efficiently, making them accessible to all creators regardless of their device.

With these performance objectives and tools, Roblox is evidently striving to enhance its platform’s capabilities and accessibility, ensuring that large-scale games can flourish without compromising the quality of the player experience.
