According to a prominent insider from Rockstar Games, the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) may be delayed until 2026. This prediction adds to the growing speculation among fans who were hoping to see the game launch as early as this year.
Currently, GTA 6 is slated for a Fall 2025 release. However, after over a year since the unveiling of its first trailer, fans are expressing mounting frustration due to the lack of gameplay reveals and additional information about the game.
As excitement builds, fans are eager for details concerning the game’s storyline, character roster, and map dimensions. While some leaks have provided insight, significant aspects remain unconfirmed, especially a definitive release date.
Insurance comes from journalist Jason Schreier, known for his accurate reports on Rockstar Games and GTA 6, including an analysis of the company’s response to workplace conditions. Schreier is skeptical that the 2025 launch window will be met, primarily due to concerns surrounding the game’s ambitious scope.
Predictions of a Postponed Release
In a recent Bloomberg article discussing 2025 gaming trends, Schreier emphasized the potential delays. He noted, “While Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. has stated that the highly sought-after game is on schedule for a fall 2025 release, it’s important to remember that companies make numerous claims regarding release timelines.”
“The next Grand Theft Auto is a huge and ambitious game; the pressure to make it great is inordinate, and developer Rockstar Games has vowed to avoid forcing excessive overtime during the final months of development.”
This commitment to humane working conditions follows a backlash against the studio regarding employee burnout during the production of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018. Schreier predicts, “I expect that it will slip to 2026.”
Previously, he expressed surprise if GTA 6 were to meet its current deadline, as delays have historically accompanied Rockstar’s ambitious titles. This cautionary forecast surfaces amidst forecasts from industry analysts who suggest that GTA 6 is poised to generate over $1 billion in pre-orders alone and may pull in over $3.2 billion in its initial year.
While Rockstar has not confirmed any delays regarding GTA 6, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has assured fans that the game will be “worth waiting for,” hinting at exciting developments on the horizon.
