Rosé Joins the The Black Label
On June 17th, Newsen reported exclusively that Rosé (from BlackPink) has officially signed a contract with The Black Label, headed by music producer Teddy, to pursue her solo endeavors.
At present, Jeon Somi, Taeyang, Zion.T, and actor Park Bo Gum are all under the management of The Black Label.
Following this, iMBC confirmed with The Black Label that they are currently in talks with Rosé regarding her contract. The label stated, “We are currently in discussions for an exclusive contract with Rosé.”
Teddy plays a crucial role in the development of BlackPink’s music, as he produces the majority of the group’s songs and has gained the admiration of the members. Rosé has playfully referred to Teddy as the unofficial fifth member of BlackPink.
Despite their success, BlackPink has faced criticism for their reliance on producer Teddy, also known as the “music wizard.”Out of the eight songs on their latest album “Born Pink,”Teddy was involved in five, including their biggest hits such as “Boombayah,””Ddu-du Ddu-du,””Kill This Love,””How You Like That,”and “Pink Venom.”This has led some to label their music as one-dimensional, with hip hop as the dominant element.
Despite Rosé’s individual contract, all four members of BlackPink have continued to pursue their own solo endeavors. While Jennie created her own company, Odd Atelier, Lisa launched LLoud and Jisoo established Blissoo. However, the group remains under their contract with YG Entertainment.
The announcement of Rosé’s addition to The Black Label has triggered discussions among fans, as the company is predominantly owned by YG Entertainment. In early 2024, The Black Label relocated from YG’s headquarters to a separate office in the Hannam district of Seoul’s Yongsan area. While some believe that The Black Label operates with autonomy, there is still a perception that YG has some level of influence on the label.
Issues Raised by Fans
Despite being signed to The Black Label, artists under the label have not been very active. In 2018, the only female artist, Somi, joined the company and released a few songs produced by Teddy, including “Birthday,””Dumb Dumb,””What You Waiting For,”and “XOXO,”which garnered some attention. However, Somi has been relatively inactive since 2021, when she finally made a comeback with her new mini-album, “Game Plan.”In addition to Somi, Taeyang and Zion.T have also not been very active musically.
Concerns have arisen among fans that Rosé may encounter a comparable predicament if she were to join The Black Label. In contrast to her fellow members, who have the autonomy to make decisions regarding their personal endeavors, Rosé would have to rely on the new management company.
“Somi and Taeyang have not received proper care from the company. They only make appearances once a year, which is worrying for Rosé. The Black Label originally only had Somi, but her activities were limited. Although Taeyang released music, the company’s promotion was lacking, even worse than YG’s. Some audience members expressed concerns that The Black Label is simply a second YG, but hopefully, this is just a rumor.”
Despite doubts, there are still those who believe in Teddy and hold onto hope that Rosé will receive favoritism due to her membership in the most renowned girl group of the moment. Furthermore, Teddy’s track record of producing popular and successful music gives confidence that Rosé’s future solo projects will also maintain the same level of quality.
