Reaffirming his stance, Manchester United icon Roy Keane has reiterated his opinion that Erling Haaland’s overall performance is comparable to that of a League Two player and that the Manchester City forward must work on his overall game.
Despite playing for Man City under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola for only one season thus far, Haaland has already established himself as a prolific striker with an impressive record of 30 goals in 37 matches in all competitions. This remarkable feat follows his incredible tally of 52 goals in 53 games during his debut season with the club.
Despite the surprise, Keane has not backed down from his comparison of Haaland’s overall performance to that of a League Two striker, which is the fourth division of English football. The former Manchester United player stands by his controversial evaluation of the 23-year-old.
In an interview with The Overlap, he expressed, “I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal. I consistently commend Erling Haaland and Manchester City, and I believe he is an exceptional striker. However, his overall performance resembles that of a League Two player. I am grateful that you do not share my opinion, as I do not expect everyone to agree with me.”
“Consistently, his overall performance falls short of expectations. While he excels as a goal scorer and striker, I have praised him for that. However, in terms of his ability to connect with teammates and provide them with options, he sometimes falls short. In terms of scoring goals, he may be the best in the world, but his overall play resembles that of a League Two player.”
The match against Arsenal ended in a 0-0 draw, and it was a challenging game as they effectively defended throughout. However, I do not believe that my comments were significant. As a young player, he still has room for improvement, and I am certain that Pep Guardiola and his team discuss ways for him to contribute more, especially when it comes to creating chances and scoring goals.
The topic begins at 46:00.
In City’s most recent Premier League match against Crystal Palace, Haaland scored his 19th league goal of the season, surpassing all other players. This goal contributed to the team’s 4-2 victory and brought them within one point of first place Arsenal.
Liverpool currently holds second place in the league, just behind Arsenal on goal difference. This has divided the two teams in the standings.
With the run-in approaching, attention will shift to Man City, who have reason to feel hopeful about overtaking their title competitors. Guardiola’s team is set to face a string of favorable opponents, giving them an advantage in the race for the title.
