The highly anticipated Borderlands 4 may debut with a pricing structure similar to the $80 price point that Nintendo and Microsoft have established for their first-party titles in 2025.
At a recent PAX East Q&A session on May 9, Gearbox Software’s CEO, Randy Pitchford, addressed inquiries regarding the potential pricing for the fourth installment of the iconic series.
When asked about the game’s possible cost, Pitchford candidly stated, “I don’t know.” He went on to reflect on the complexities of the current gaming landscape.
“It’s an interesting time, right? On one hand, developers want to maximize sales in a competitive market while being mindful of consumers who are sensitive to pricing. On the other hand, the reality is that development budgets are skyrocketing, compounded by tariffs affecting retail packaging. It’s indeed a challenging environment, ” he elaborated.

Anticipated Pre-order Details for Borderlands 4
Focusing specifically on Borderlands 4, Pitchford disclosed that the development budget for the sequel is “more than twice” that of its predecessor, Borderlands 3. Although he refrained from disclosing an exact price, he assured fans that it would be announced alongside the opening of pre-orders, which he indicated would happen “soon.”
“It might align with the new pricing strategies from Nintendo and Microsoft, or we could opt to retain a lower price point, ” Pitchford mentioned, clarifying that the final decision rests with the publisher, not Gearbox.
All Borderlands titles have been published under the 2K Games banner, a division of Take-Two Interactive, which is also the parent company of Rockstar Games, the studio behind the GTA franchise.
The pricing strategy for Borderlands 4 could serve as a bellwether for consumer expectations for GTA 6, especially as it gears up for its launch on May 26, 2026.
As with earlier installments, Borderlands 4 is set to introduce four new Vault Hunters, offering players a fresh range of characters to explore.
