Capcom has recently disclosed that the upcoming game, Resident Evil Requiem, was initially conceived as a live-service title. However, the development team decided to abandon this direction midway through the project.

This news is likely a relief for long-time supporters of this iconic survival horror series, as the franchise has historically focused on single-player, offline experiences. Transforming Resident Evil into a live-service model would have posed significant challenges.

During the early phases of Requiem’s production, Capcom recognized this difficulty. In a Creators’ Message video featured in the June 27 Spotlight broadcast, director Koshi Nakanishi shared some insights into the development process. He remarked, “You might have heard some of the rumors surrounding this title. We explored concepts like an online Resident Evil and even an open-world variant.”

Despite developing some intriguing ideas, Nakanishi noted that they ultimately concluded these concepts did not align with what fans truly desired. The team subsequently returned to their roots, emphasizing the original formula that has defined the series.

Resident Evil & Multiplayer Adventures

While the prospect of integrating multiplayer elements into Resident Evil is not unfeasible, Capcom’s past attempts to expand the franchise into the online realm have met with mixed results.

One of the more recent efforts, RE:Verse, aimed at celebrating the franchise’s 25th anniversary, has now closed its doors permanently as of June 29, 2025, after peaking at just over 2, 000 players on Steam.

Additionally, multiplayer-focused titles such as Operation Raccoon City and Umbrella Corps, released in 2012 and 2016 respectively, received negative feedback from players.

As it stands, it remains uncertain whether future mainline installments in the Resident Evil franchise will incorporate multiplayer features. For now, Capcom appears committed to refining their expertise in delivering a compelling single-player experience with Requiem.
