Customizing Sleep Settings in Windows 11
Last Updated: August 25, 2025 – Windows 11 offers an automated feature designed to enhance energy efficiency by entering sleep mode after a specified period of inactivity. This guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions for modifying these sleep settings on your device.
Two primary functionalities exist within the power settings: one that suspends the system (sleep mode), maintaining your active processes in memory, and another that merely turns off the display while the system runs in the background. By default, these settings prioritize energy conservation and battery longevity, but users have the flexibility to adjust them according to personal preferences.
In this guide, I’ll explain how to modify the sleep timeout for both laptops and desktops and how to entirely disable the sleep functionality if desired.
How to Change Sleep Settings on Windows 11
Follow these steps to customize the sleep settings on your Windows 11 device:
-
Open the Settings app.
-
Select System.
-
Click on the Power & battery tab.
-
Locate the “Screen and sleep” settings under the “Power”section.
-
Set the duration for how long the screen should remain on before turning off when your device is plugged in or running on battery.
-
Specify the timeout duration for putting the computer to sleep, adjusting for both plugged in and battery modes.
Once you finalize these settings, your device will adhere to the newly configured screen and sleep timings.

For desktop users, the settings are typically found under the “Power” section with options relevant only when the device is plugged in. Please note that the arrangement of these settings may vary depending on your Windows version. The instructions provided here reflect the layout for versions 24H2 and higher. For version 23H2 users, you may see options titled “On battery power, turn off my screen after” and “When plugged in, turn off my screen after.”
To promote energy efficiency, the default settings typically recommend 5 minutes for plugged-in devices and 3 minutes for battery operation. However, users are encouraged to tailor these values to their usage patterns, as there is no single optimal setting.
How to Disable Sleep Timers on Windows 11
To ensure that your computer and screen do not enter sleep mode automatically, adhere to these steps:
-
Open the Settings application.
-
Select System.
-
Access the Power & battery tab.
-
Navigate to “Screen and sleep” settings under the “Power”section.
-
In the “Plugged in” section, select the Never option to stop the screen from turning off automatically.
-
For the “On battery” section, choose Never as well to avoid the computer entering sleep mode.
Upon completing these changes, your device will no longer automatically enter sleep mode, regardless of user activity. However, it’s essential to recognize that doing so could lead to increased energy consumption.
