“Every seed must weather storms to grow—but what ILLIT faced wasn’t just rain. It was a hurricane.”
From Hostility to Resilience: The ILLIT Journey
Unlike many rookie idols whose debut year is marked by growth and fanfare, ILLIT’s inaugural year has been characterized by a relentless struggle for survival. Instead of receiving admiration, they confronted hostility and mockery from the very start.

Every aspect of their performances—from speech and expressions to stage movements—was scrutinized and dissected, becoming fodder for memes across platforms like YouTube Shorts and Twitter. Rather than being embraced as artists, ILLIT was relegated to the status of an online parody target.
Escalation of Online Backlash
The situation intensified during the HYBE vs. ADOR leadership conflict, where ILLIT was cast as a “replacement project” for the successful group NewJeans. This narrative gained traction when the former ADOR CEO Min Hee-jin accused ILLIT of plagiarizing concepts from NewJeans, sparking one of the fiercest online backlashes directed at a rookie group in recent history.

When Innocuous Comments Spark Outrage
Even the most innocent comments became sources of controversy. For instance, when a member expressed her fondness for kalguksu (knife-cut noodles), accusations flew that she was deliberately targeting NewJeans, citing a similar statement made by that group. This suggested that ILLIT was purposefully mimicking them.
The bitterness continued with the so-called “cold shoulder” incident, where a member of NewJeans alleged that an ILLIT manager ignored her. Subsequent CCTV footage, however, contradicted this claim, showing ILLIT members being the first to greet their peers. Nonetheless, the narrative had already soured, and in the realm of public opinion, ILLIT had been deemed guilty.

More Than Just Criticism
What ILLIT faced under the pretext of “criticism” extended far beyond typical feedback. They grappled with a toxic combination of appearance-based ridicule, emotional scapegoating, and coordinated online aggression—the grim intersection of industry politics and fan animosity.
Celebrating Strength Amid Adversity
In spite of these challenges, ILLIT chose resilience. On their one-year anniversary, they hosted a heartfelt mini-concert, showcasing acoustic and band versions of tracks like Magnetic, Cherish, and Almond Chocolate. This celebration radiated warmth, sincerity, and subtle defiance against the negativity they had encountered.

Labelled as “controversial simply for existing, ” their ongoing commitment to performing and connecting with fans has become an emblem of strength and fortitude in the face of adversity.
The Human Cost Behind the Scenes
However, the emotional cost of this chaos was profound. Reports surfaced that ILLIT’s manager and a member of HYBE’s security team resigned following threats from supporters of NewJeans and their families, leaving the young manager in their twenties to seek psychological treatment.

A Wake-Up Call for Kindness
As the story unfolded during Korea’s holiday season—encompassing Labor Day, Children’s Day, and Parents’ Day—it resonated beyond mere entertainment news. It served as a poignant reminder that kindness is a choice while cruelty brings real-world consequences.
