Tribute Documentary Airs for Veteran Actor Lee Soon-jae
On November 28, MBC broadcast a poignant memorial documentary titled “Actor Lee Soon-jae, Thank You for Everything, ” honoring the illustrious career and life of the beloved performer. Initially planned as a retrospective, the documentary’s production faced delays due to Lee Soon-jae’s swift health deterioration. It ultimately aired just three days after his passing, serving as a heartfelt tribute to his legacy.

Remembering a Passionate Performer
Actor Kai, who appeared alongside Lee Soon-jae in the play Waiting for Waiting for Godot, recounted his on-stage charisma: “He was always seeking ways to enhance his performance and engage with the audience. His joy in acting was palpable, and he thrived on the audience’s laughter and applause.”
Even when his health severely declined, Lee Soon-jae remained committed to his performances. Producer Park Jung-mi recalled a particularly difficult moment: “He was unable to walk or speak properly, and I tearfully begged him to cancel the show.”

Kai further noted, “Despite his condition, he insisted on honoring his commitment to the audience, expressing that he didn’t want to disappoint anyone. After the 90-minute show, he went directly to the emergency room.”
A Storied Career and Lasting Impact
Lee Soon-jae passed away on November 25 at the remarkable age of 91. Born in Hoeryong, North Hamgyong Province, he graduated from Seoul High School and pursued a degree in philosophy at Seoul National University. He made his acting debut as a first-generation KBS actor in 1960 and continued to be one of Korea’s oldest active actors until last year. His memorable roles in television dramas such as What on Earth is Love, Men of the Bathhouse, as well as films including Stand By Me, Intimate Strangers, and I Love You, earned him the affectionate title of “National Father.”

Beyond Acting: A Life of Service
Apart from his acting achievements, Lee Soon-jae also made significant contributions as a public servant. He served in the National Assembly after winning a seat in the 14th general election in 1992 and held various positions, including spokesperson for the Democratic Liberal Party and secretary of the Korea-Japan Parliamentary Association.
His unwavering dedication to his craft was evident even amidst health struggles last year. In January 2024, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the KBS Entertainment Awards for his role in Dog Knows Everything. In his acceptance speech, he expressed his gratitude, stating, “Actors should be judged solely by their performances. Thank you to all the viewers who have supported and encouraged me throughout my career.”
