Perplexity AI has recently submitted an unsolicited cash offer of $34.5 billion to acquire Google’s Chrome browser, a move closely connected to the ongoing U. S.antitrust proceedings against Google. This bold proposition emerges from the AI company’s ambitions amid significant regulatory scrutiny.
Currently valued at approximately $18 billion, Perplexity AI positions itself as a serious contender for the purchase should regulators mandate Google to divest its Chrome browser. Notably, Chrome dominates the global browser market, boasting over 60% market share and around 3.5 billion users worldwide, according to insights from The Wall Street Journal.
In its acquisition proposal, Perplexity pledged to uphold the open-source nature of Chrome’s underlying Chromium project. Furthermore, they plan to maintain Google as the default search engine while empowering users with choices, and they have committed to substantial investments aimed at enhancing Chrome’s capabilities.

Google’s Stance on the Offer
This substantial offer comes on the heels of U. S.courts deliberating possible remedies in the Department of Justice’s antitrust lawsuit against Google, which could potentially lead to the enforced sale of Chrome. However, Google has yet to express any interest in pursuing a sale, and industry analysts largely deem the likelihood of this deal materializing as slim.
Perplexity’s bid, which exceeds double its current market valuation, clearly underscores the company’s aggressive positioning in anticipation of a possible court-ordered divestiture.
Notably, this development follows the launch of Comet, Perplexity’s own AI-powered web browser released in July. This new browser is designed to compete directly with established giants like Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, further illustrating Perplexity’s expansion ambitions in the tech landscape.
