YouTube’s CEO, Neal Mohan, has recently elaborated on the company’s efforts to refine the platform for its creators, amid mounting criticism regarding recent updates.

As with all social media platforms, YouTube is continuously adapting to meet evolving user expectations. While its fundamental purpose remains video uploads, the platform’s dynamics have shifted significantly beyond traditional long-form content.

The rise of YouTube Shorts, along with the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the platform’s features, has deeply influenced users’ viewing habits. However, this shift has not been without controversy, particularly concerning AI moderation, which has led to backlash against Mohan and the platform.

Striving for Perfection in Creator Experience

In January 2026, during an interview featured in CNBC’s Leaders Playbook, Mohan articulated YouTube’s commitment to achieving an ideal environment for creators. He stated, “Our job is to really build the stage, and what I mean by that metaphor is, it’s got to be the best stage.”

He emphasized that the platform should provide not only the best technology but also an optimal user experience: “It’s got to have the best sort of place for viewers to sit, the seats, all that has to be perfect, the sound. But the people that are on the stage are our creators.”

Despite these aspirations, Mohan faces substantial pushback. Popular streamer MoistCr1TiKaL has openly criticized the platform’s reliance on AI, calling Mohan “delusional” for his staunch support of AI technologies. He articulated his frustration, stating, “We haven’t seen anything positive on YouTube as a result of these AI tools that Neal speaks so highly of. They’re a f**king scourge right now.”

MoistCr1TiKaL further questioned Mohan’s commitment, asking if the CEO would prefer to let AI control YouTube entirely. His statements underscore a growing sentiment among creators who feel alienated by recent changes under Mohan’s leadership.

As YouTube navigates these complex challenges, the platform’s dedication to improving for creators will be pivotal in determining its future success.
