Recently, YouTube users have raised concerns about a significant issue: the inability to view comments on various videos while using ad-blockers. This troubling trend has even affected YouTube Premium subscribers, leaving many surprised and frustrated.
In the past few months, YouTube has implemented several updates to its platform, some of which have resulted in unexpected challenges for its user base. For example, the platform temporarily removed custom subtitles, commonly favored by VTubers for their music videos.
As of February 16, many users reported an inability to access comments on YouTube content. Some Reddit users, including stev1234567890 and ZBLongladder, attributed this issue directly to their use of ad-blocking software. A significant revelation by stev1234567890 confirmed this theory, stating, “Update: I turned off my adblocker, and they’re turned on again.”

YouTube Premium Subscribers Affected Too
Worryingly, the issue isn’t limited to general users; many YouTube Premium subscribers have experienced the same frustration. Videos display messages indicating that “comments are turned off, ”which creates the impression that uploaders have disabled commenting manually. One user remarked about needing to refresh the page to see comments, illuminating the confusion surrounding the situation.

Not All Users Are Impacted
Interestingly, this problem does not seem to have a universal impact. While numerous users voice dissatisfaction online, others report a seamless experience. One redditor shared their success using Firefox with Ublock Origin, stating they encountered “zero issues”—suggesting that the problem may stem from A/B testing or certain user regions.
Another user added, “That’s the problem. AB testing. Some users get horrible changes, others don’t, ” highlighting the disparity in experiences. Reports on platforms like Reddit and broader social media indicate the volume of complaints is significant, yet YouTube has not officially addressed the situation.
In light of the problematic removal of custom subtitles, which YouTube attributed to a “temporary issue”affecting “video playback, ”it remains to be seen how the platform will tackle these current concerns regarding ad-blockers and comment visibility.
