Anticipation for the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is growing, as new information continues to be revealed about its design, features, specifications, and potential release date. Here is a comprehensive overview of all the current details that have been gathered about the Switch 2.
After the Wii U’s lackluster performance and the decline of support for the 3DS, the Nintendo Switch was launched in 2017. This innovative console combined the strengths of both its predecessors, the Wii U and the 3DS.
Despite the Switch being in its seventh year since release, Nintendo is already working on a successor. In order to keep up with the competition, we have searched the internet for the most recent rumors surrounding a potential Switch 2, which could potentially rival handheld devices like the Steam Deck in the future.
Release window speculation
According to Chris Dring, head of GameIndustry.biz, developers working on upcoming games have been informed to expect the release of the Switch 2 within the current financial year. This information was revealed on the August 13, 2024 episode of the GameIndustry.biz Microcast podcast, where Dring discussed with industry professionals who expressed hope for an April or May release date.
Dring also clarified that, according to his conversations with various developers, none of them anticipate its launch within this financial year. This recent update contradicts the previous statement from Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa, who had announced that the launch was expected during this fiscal year. The first official confirmation of the upcoming Switch successor was made by Nintendo on May 7 via their official Twitter/X account.
Shuntaro Furukawa previously announced that there will be no new hardware released until after April 2024, as reported by As.com. It is likely that Nintendo is strategically planning to include the sales of the new hardware in the following quarter, giving them a fresh start.
Despite not receiving an official release date, it is known that Nintendo’s current fiscal year will conclude in March 2025. Furukawa’s statement aligns with speculation that the launch of the new console will occur in March 2025. This extended timeline will supposedly allow developers more time to create software for the release.
Being shown off behind closed doors
According to other sources, game developers have already received the Switch and showcased upcoming titles at Gamescom. These titles reportedly include the Unreal Engine 5 Matrix Awakens demo and an upgraded version of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
According to a recent leak from Nash Weedle, the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is nearing completion. Weedle suggests that a Spanish studio, likely MercurySteam, has already received a development kit for the Switch 2.
Despite Nintendo’s efforts to keep details confidential, this leak reveals that the primary hardware specifications for the display, processor, and RAM have been solidified. Sharing a development kit with partner studios prior to the launch allows for ample time to prepare games for release.
It is likely that the release announcement will follow a pattern similar to that of the Switch, with an advance announcement made months before the actual release. The Switch, for example, was announced in October 2016 and released in March 2017.
Is it Time to Speculate on Prices?
According to a report by Japan-based news site Kabutan, Toko Securities analyst Hideki Yasuda predicts that the Nintendo Switch 2 will have a launch price of $499. Despite rumors of the console being “relatively cheap”in US dollars, Yasuda suggests that this price point is in line with various reports.
On August 15, 2024, the analyst predicted that the cost of the Switch 2 would likely be around 75,000 Japanese Yen, which is equivalent to less than $499.
If the Switch 2 is priced at $500, it would be nearly $100 higher than the previous prediction. This would put Nintendo’s handheld in competition with other devices such as the ROG Ally X and Steam Deck. However, being a Nintendo product, the company may choose to sell the device at a loss initially in order to increase the number of users and potentially make profits from software and accessories sales in the long run.
With a significant increase in hardware and the potential for additional features thanks to the onboard Nvidia chip, it is likely that the Switch 2 will be more expensive than its predecessor.
Specs Leak
- CPU: Custom Nvidia ARM SoC “DRAKE” (T239)
- GPU: Nvidia Ampere architecture
- CUDA cores: 1280
- Display: 8-inch LCD
- RAM: 12GB LPDDR5
- Storage: 256 GB
According to sources from Reuters, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be powered by a custom Nvidia chip. This information was initially discovered in May 2022. Leaker Kopite7Kimi disclosed that the console will utilize a custom Nvidia SoC called the T239, with the codename DRAKE. Similar to the original Switch, the SoC will be based on ARM technology.
The inclusion of an Ampere-based GPU in the Switch 2 would enable the console to utilize advanced rendering techniques such as DLSS 2 super-resolution and DLSS 3.5 ray reconstruction. However, it should not be expected to have any frame generation capabilities. Staying with an ARM SoC also has the potential benefit of allowing the Switch 2 to support backward compatibility, according to multiple rumors.
Despite no official confirmation, initial reports from reliable sources suggest that fans should temper their expectations, especially regarding the capabilities of the rumored Switch 2. In a recent analysis, Dr. Serkan Toto from GameIndustry.biz predicted that the upcoming model will be more of an “evolution”rather than a complete overhaul.
According to Microsoft court documents, the Switch 2 may have a similar level of power as the PS4 and Xbox One.
According to YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, who discussed the topic on his ‘Broken Silicon’ podcast, the upcoming Switch 2 may have a higher clock speed in docked mode than originally predicted. During a conversation with fellow YouTuber The Phawx, Moore’s Law is Dead mentioned being informed by sources that the console will have a significantly lower clock speed in undocked mode in order to improve battery life compared to its predecessor.
Based on data collected by users of the Famiboards forum from Shipping and Customs records, it appears that the Switch 2 will come equipped with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of internal storage. This would be a significant increase from the Switch’s current specifications of 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32GB of internal storage.
Important Features
With the addition of DLSS, the potential for the Switch 2 to surpass expectations is increased, as it is currently being seen with weaker PCs. This could potentially result in the ability to play games in 4K by utilizing Nvidia’s super-resolution AI algorithms to enlarge the image.
Despite being based on a 3050 laptop, we were able to significantly enhance performance by implementing DLSS 2. Additionally, hardware compatible with DLSS 3 experiences substantial improvements.
Nvidia’s current focus is DLSS, but it is unlikely that frame generation will be included. However, the SoC will still need tensor cores, as they are responsible for powering DLSS.
The upcoming Switch 2 is anticipated to feature DDR5 RAM, greatly enhancing its overall performance. The exact amount of RAM to be used is still unknown, but current Nvidia SoCs such as the Jetson Nano utilize 8 GB. However, some NX versions have been reported to use 16 GB, and there is even a development kit with 64 GB. It is unlikely that the Switch 2 will have more than 16 GB of RAM, and it is more likely to have closer to 8 GB.
To ensure efficient storage, it is recommended that Nintendo utilizes an NVMe or eMMC drive. These are the same types of drives used in the Steam Deck, and are cost-effective. However, considering Nintendo’s stance on self-repair, it is likely that they will opt for an embedded storage solution that is soldered onto the motherboard.
Preventing Controller Leaks
According to a leak by Switch accessory manufacturer Mobapad, the Switch 2 will still be utilizing Joy-Cons. This information was shared on their official Facebook and Bilibili social media pages, confirming that the upcoming hardware will maintain the use of Joy-cons.
Rather than the usual rail system found on the current models of the Nintendo Switch, the Switch 2 Joy-cons will utilize an electromagnet system for connection.
According to Modapad, the upcoming Joy-Cons will have a larger and more ergonomic design, and their SL and SR buttons will be made of metal. The leaked information also reveals that the controllers will feature additional buttons, with one located behind each Joy-Con and another below the ‘Home’ button.
The newly developed electromagnetic connection system may render current Joy-cons obsolete, but according to Modapad, the Bluetooth chip of the Switch 2 will be compatible with all existing Joy-Cons and Pro controllers.
Furthermore, on October 17, 2024, Nintendo revealed a new Joy-Con accessory that will be released. This innovative add-on enables the charging of two additional standard Joy-Con controllers or NES edition versions while they are connected to the Switch dock.
Since the announcement of this accessory came seven years after the initial launch of the Switch, there is speculation that it could be paving the way for Switch 2 compatibility. A previous leak from Modapad also hinted at the possibility of the new console being able to use the current Joy-Cons. This has led many fans to believe that this upcoming accessory will serve as a bridge between the two consoles, allowing for the continued use of Joy-Cons on the new Switch, despite rumors of a new magnetic rail system.
The introduction of Hall Effect sticks could potentially eliminate stick drift, giving the Switch 2 a significant advantage over its previous model plagued by this issue. A patent was recently filed by Nintendo in the US on September 7, 2024, detailing the incorporation of a magnetic field in the controller for the upcoming Switch 2. This suggests that Nintendo may be planning to incorporate hall-effect sticks in their new console.
Furthermore, there is a new rumor circulating that Nintendo has mandated the inclusion of motion sensors in the controllers for the upcoming Switch 2, utilizing gyroscope technology.
According to UniversoNintendo, the rumor was shared by a long-standing partner of Nintendo, who disclosed this information to the hosts of the Bonuslevel podcast regarding the mandatory implementation of gyroscopic controls in the upcoming successor to the Switch.
The technology is already present in the current Joy-Cons and is compatible with a wide range of Switch games. However, the manufacturer, who wishes to remain anonymous, mentions that this is the first instance of Nintendo requesting such a requirement for the production of their new accessories.
Design Rumors
The recent discovery of a patent has revealed a potential redesign for the official Nintendo Switch dock. The proposed design includes a rotating back panel for the input/output section, allowing for more flexibility in positioning the dock’s ports to suit different TV or monitor setups.
Nintendo has given the name ‘swivel block’ to this rotating section, which effectively addresses cable management. It is unclear whether this patent is intended for the Switch 2 or a potential future product.
Display leaks and rumors
According to Omida analyst Hiroshi Hayase, the upcoming handheld, the Switch 2, will be equipped with a minimum of one eight-inch LCD screen. This information was shared in a discussion with Bloomberg.
According to a Nintendo patent, there are rumors that the Switch 2 may feature two screens. This could potentially revive the dual-screen displays that were popular on the Wii U and DS consoles in the past. It is possible that this could be used to remaster old games and introduce a new unique feature for the console.
Unfortunately, the absence of an OLED screen on the Switch 2 could be perceived as a regression, but this decision may have been made in order to keep the price affordable for consumers. Additionally, the 8-inch screen would be significantly bigger than the 6.2-inch display that was featured on the original Switch upon its release.
Availability speculation
In February 2024, a Japanese newspaper reported that Nintendo had postponed the release of the Switch 2 to 2025 for a valid reason. Despite the console being ready, Nintendo’s decision was motivated by their desire to have a strong selection of games available at launch and to prevent reselling.
During their June earnings call with shareholders, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa confirmed that measures were being implemented to prevent resellers from price gouging. He also stated that there will be sufficient supply to meet the demand.
Despite this, Furukawa stated that he did not anticipate a recurrence of the semiconductor shortage that hindered the production of the Switch in 2022 and 2023.
“He clarified that in the previous two years, there was a shortage of semiconductor components that hindered our ability to produce enough Nintendo Switch units. However, this issue has been resolved and we are confident that the production of the successor model will not be greatly affected by component shortages.”
Games & backward compatibility
Recent reports state that the Switch 2 will maintain backwards compatibility with original Nintendo Switch cartridges. According to Modapad, a reliable source, the upcoming console will be able to play both original Switch cartridges and Switch 2 cartridges. However, it has been revealed by the Switch accessory manufacturer responsible for the Switch 2 Joy-con leaks that Switch 2 carts will not be compatible with any original Switch models.
In a comment on a post in r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, well-known leaker Nate the Hate also confirmed that the upcoming Switch successor will offer “backwards compatibility support.”
Although this could indicate that physical games will be compatible with the Switch 2, it is uncertain if the same will apply to digitally purchased games, such as those in the Nintendo Switch Online and NSO Expansion Pack libraries.
The introduction of the Nintendo Switch also brought about the opportunity to access a variety of NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Genesis, and N64 games through a subscription service, making it the first time such a library was available on the system.
A recent discovery by X/Twitter user Stealth40k revealed that Nintendo is actively seeking applicants for various roles, such as front-end and back-end engineers, as well as a director/planner for their Nintendo Switch Online services.
Having brought on board several new team members specifically tasked with enhancing and sustaining NSO, and considering the imminent release of the Switch’s predecessor, it can be speculated that the prospects for NSO libraries transferring to the upcoming handheld are promising.
Upcoming Games for Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo has yet to confirm or announce any games specifically for the Switch 2. However, the recent reveal of Pokemon Legends Z-A at the Pokemon Presents showcase has led to speculation among fans that it may be a launch title for the upcoming console. This highly-anticipated game, set to release in March 2025, is the next installment in the Pokemon Legends Arceus series and was showcased during the latest Pokemon Presents event on February 27. Coincidentally, this aligns with the rumored release date for the Switch 2.
Currently in development, Nintendo has also announced Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, set to release in 2025 for the Nintendo Switch.
There have been ongoing rumors about a possible sequel to Super Mario Odyssey. It is possible that Nintendo is reserving the sequel for the upcoming Switch 2, but no official statements have been made about its development.
According to a recent rumor, there is a possibility that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be available on the successor to the Nintendo Switch. The leak was initially shared by Nash Weedle on X/Twitter and was further supported by Necro Felipe, a reputable leaker and Editor-in-chief of Universo Nintendo. It seems that the upcoming title from Ubisoft may indeed be released on the Switch 2.
It was rumored that Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Assassin’s Creed Origins would be ported to the future console. It was also speculated that Odyssey and Origins would be available as a bundle. However, Felipe did not support this part of the rumor.
In an interview with IGN, Amazon Games Vice President Chris Hartmann also stated that the company has plans to develop games for the upcoming Switch console, praising it as a great device.
Despite not providing details on any potential Amazon Games titles in development for the Switch 2, Hartmann did mention that the company is currently focused on the development of the Tomb Raider series, as well as Throne and Liberty and Blue Protocol for the future.
Currently, we can only make assumptions about the potential games that will be available on the upcoming Switch successor when it is released.
