Ryan Garcia and his team are attempting to reach a compromise with the boxing commission as they recently learned that two supplements were contaminated prior to his match against Devin Haney.
Garcia shocked the boxing community by securing a victory against the previously unbeaten Haney in their Brooklyn, New York match on April 20.
Shortly after, it was reported that Garcia had tested positive for Ostarine, a prohibited substance, causing skepticism towards his win.
The 25-year-old promptly tried to invalidate the adverse result, asserting that it was simply due to contamination from supplements.
According to Garcia’s legal team, the latest turn of events in the chaotic saga gave a glimmer of hope to the Victorville, California native.
Paul Greene, the legal representative for Garcia, released a statement in which he stated the following, according to a post by Michael Bensonn on Twitter:
“After analyzing samples from two supplements listed on the VADA Doping Control Forms, which were signed by Ryan Garcia on April 19th and 20th, it was found that they contained traces of Ostarine, resulting in a positive test result.”
“This reaffirms our consistent belief that Ryan was a victim of supplement contamination and has never knowingly consumed any banned or performance-enhancing substances.”
Despite any claims made to the contrary, it is unequivocally false and defamatory to question Ryan’s integrity as a clean fighter.
“In every stage of his career, Ryan has willingly undergone multiple tests, all of which have come back with negative results, demonstrating his dedication to fair and honest competition.”
Moreover, his clean record is further supported by the fact that he had multiple negative tests prior to his fight against Haney.
“The small amount of Ostarine found in his samples, which was only in the billionth of a gram range, combined with a clean hair sample, provides evidence of contamination rather than deliberate consumption.”
Next week’s press conference will further elaborate on the recent test results and address any inquiries that may arise.
Later, Greene announced that they were in contact with the boxing commission and were hoping to come to a compromise regarding Garcia’s potential sanction.
“We are aware that Ryan will face some sort of penalty, but based on this evidence, we believe that the penalty should now be lighter.”
Greene stated that their objective is for the penalty to be lifted within “four months or less” , allowing the fighter to move on and continue his career.
Despite boasting an impressive 25-1 record in the ring, Garcia, who is 25 years old, may face uncertainty as the commission considers overturning his latest win against Haney.
