Samsung’s Newest Gaming Monitor with 3D Feature

Samsung has recently brought back their 3D gaming monitors that do not require the use of glasses, which was first showcased at CES and is now becoming a tangible product.

At Gamescom, where the complete reveal of the monitor took place, there is more to see than just video games. Hardware manufacturers also showcase their products.

The new monitors are equipped with a lenticular lens that can individually send each of the two overlapped images to each eye. This function is managed by an eye-tracking system, which includes a built-in camera.

The Odyssey 3D monitor by Samsung eliminates the need for glasses and cleverly handles depth by constantly tracking the user’s movements and adjusting the display accordingly.

3D has fallen by the wayside

Despite being a popular technology over a decade ago, 3D has lost its popularity. Many 3D-capable devices have been abandoned and considered e-waste, as most manufacturers have stopped supporting the technology.

Nintendo and the 3DS were one of the final strongholds. Even though it ceased production in 2020, it introduced several versions of the 2DS before doing so.

In 2021, Acer released a laptop with similar technology. The ConceptD 7 SpatialLabs Edition offered a high-quality machine with a glasses-free 3D display. However, it did not gain much popularity and was quite expensive, costing around $4000 when it first launched.

Despite Acer not taking any further action, Samsung has now emerged as a contender by announcing its entry into the competition.

A video from XDA showcases the practical application of the feature, with overlapping visuals during combat in Lies of P.

Samsung has not yet announced a price or release date for the monitor. However, based on the typically high prices of their high-end Odyssey gaming monitors, we can expect this monitor to be quite expensive due to the new technology it incorporates.

Samsung has previously dabbled in the monitor industry. In 2022, they released the Arc monitor, a large panel that could be rotated into a vertical position to accommodate three displays.
