Calls for Regulation of Entertainment Journalism: A Petition with Growing Support
On February 24, a petition titled “Request for Strong National Assembly Sanctions to Prevent Celebrity Suicides Caused by Entertainment Journalists’ YouTube Activities” was launched on the National Assembly’s official petition site. By 10 AM on March 13, it had garnered over 41, 000 signatures, reflecting rising concern among citizens about the troubling practices of some entertainment journalists.
The petitioner expressed distress over the behavior of entertainment journalists, claiming that their actions resemble harassment and reach levels akin to stalking. They highlighted the case of Kim Sae-ron, stating that despite her efforts to introspect following a DUI incident, her every move was relentlessly documented and scrutinized by these journalists on their YouTube channels, continually bringing her past to the forefront when the public was starting to move on.
The petition advocates for establishing basic qualification standards for YouTubers and enforcing specific content regulations, emphasizing the influence of YouTube as a dominant platform in modern media consumption. The request underlines the necessity of holding these content creators to the same accountability standards applied to traditional media outlets.
Under current regulations, if a petition accumulates 50, 000 signatures within a 30-day period, it is eligible for formal review by relevant legislative committees. Subsequently, the National Assembly assesses its potential for discussion in a plenary session within 90 days.
Earlier, in an interview with Iilgan Sports, Kim Sae-ron’s father voiced concern for his daughter’s suffering, particularly attributing it to the actions of entertainment journalist-turned-YouTuber Lee Jin-ho. He expressed that the family’s grief remains unresolved, and they intend to pursue legal action against him.
In light of these developments, Lee Jin-ho responded via his YouTube community tab, expressing sorrow over the family’s distress. He stated, “Regardless of the circumstances, I deeply bow my head in sorrow over the fact that the bereaved family, who must already be devastated, has had to see their names repeatedly mentioned in news articles. Once again, I extend my deepest condolences to the late Kim Sae-ron.”
