It is widely known that Baldur’s Gate 3 offers some of the toughest battles in the game, as enemies possess powerful mechanics and spells that have the potential to decimate your entire party. As a result, it is crucial to obtain buffs and properly prepare your spells before engaging in these fights.
Counterspell is believed by players to be none other than the most effective option.
A user shared their successful strategy of countering Balthazar’s attempt to cast Animate Dead during the Shadowfell fight in a Reddit thread titled “Get counterspelled idiot.”

While certain players may opt to defeat him by throwing him into the chasm, it is quite amusing to witness the necromancer’s defeat as he stands alone, unable to summon his army of pesky skeletons due to a failed spell.
One person exclaimed, “It’s so powerful!”and another responded, “I also appreciate how they enhance its impact through animation. It’s not just average, it’s a vigorous stop.”
A different user exclaimed, “I can’t believe I keep forgetting about Counterspell! I’ve attempted that battle numerous times, mostly to achieve a better outcome than death.”
In the meantime, a user noted that in their playthrough, they were able to have Gale use Counterspell on a problematic character in Act 3 who constantly attempted to use Dimension Door to escape on the first turn.
Despite being denied retreat, Minthara used a pair of level 3 smites to completely eliminate him.
“I truly appreciate the way my sorcerer and Gale consistently counter enemy spells. They’re absolutely essential,”one person added.
Despite the abundance of freedom in handling battles in Baldur’s Gate 3, it is also possible to learn the Counterspell trick if there are no party members who can use it.
