The iconic horror movie The Blair Witch Project will soon be available on a limited edition Blu-ray, offering fans a completely new viewing experience.
Describing The Blair Witch Project as a crucial horror movie would be an understatement. This film became a cultural sensation, introducing the found footage genre to the American audience. To this day, it is highly regarded as one of the most terrifying horror films ever created.
Just in time for its 25th anniversary, Second Sight Films is set to unveil a two-disc limited edition of The Blair Witch Project on Blu-ray.
The collection will feature a newly restored version of the film, using the original Hi8 and 16mm film elements and supervised by the film’s original producers and directors.
The set will feature not only the restored version of the film, but also the original theatrical release and the festival cut. In addition, a new feature-length documentary and multiple audio commentary tracks will be included.
In 1999, The Blair Witch Project was released, claiming to be recovered footage from cameras that were left behind by a group of student filmmakers who had disappeared. The group had entered the Maryland woods to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch.
The movie gained attention for its utilization of the found footage technique and its promotional tactics. By displaying the actors as missing on posters and conducting in-character interviews on a website, the film’s marketing created a viral sensation, leading many to mistakenly believe that it was a real documentary.
The Blair Witch Project became one of the top-grossing films of 1999, ranking as the 11th highest-earning movie at the global box office that year, following closely behind The Green Mile.
Despite efforts to expand the Blair Witch Project franchise, they have not been successful. A reboot from Blumhouse has been planned, but a release date has yet to be revealed.
