School Alerts Parents to Dangers of TikTok’s ‘Superman’ Trend
In light of several reported injuries, a school in North Wales has issued a cautionary notice to parents regarding the viral ‘Superman’ trend circulating on TikTok. This surge in activities, which saw students attempting uninhibited stunts, has raised concerns about safety among school officials.
Rhyl High School communicated through a letter to parents and guardians, encouraging them to engage in discussions about the risks associated with this popular challenge. The letter stated, “Over the past week or so it has become apparent that a trend has developed where pupils are impersonating a ‘Superman’ action,” as reported by North Wales Live.
Understanding the ‘Superman’ Challenge
The ‘Superman’ challenge primarily involves a group of individuals holding hands, while one participant leaps forward, extending their arms out, before being lifted into the air. This flashy performance, popularized on TikTok, has introduced a thrill factor; however, it poses significant risks.
“It is extremely dangerous and someone could potentially get seriously hurt,” the letter warned. “Outside on the yard, pupils have been seen standing right next to the concrete ‘seating’ blocks when doing this and should anyone move or fail to catch the one running, again they could be seriously injured.”
To mitigate the risks, school staff have been actively monitoring students and intervening when necessary. There are plans to deliver safety briefings during school assemblies, emphasizing that sanctions will follow if risky behaviors persist. The letter urged families to reinforce these warnings at home: “I wanted to bring this to your attention as pupils are seen doing this on leaving school too and it appears to be a trend that is happening widely. We would be very grateful if you could please reinforce the dangers at home too. Thanks for your support.”
Global Impact and TikTok’s Response
This concerning trend isn’t isolated to North Wales; reports indicate similar incidents occurring internationally, with young people in countries such as Romania, Brazil, and North Macedonia sustaining injuries like broken bones and bruises while attempting the dance.
In response to the escalating safety concerns, TikTok has taken steps to address the issue by incorporating a warning message that appears during searches for terms like “superman” or “superman dance.” This message states, “This phrase may be associated with behavior or content that violates our guidelines. Promoting a safe and positive experience is TikTok’s top priority.”
