Kevin Williamson recently expressed his thoughts on the surprising exits of Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega from the upcoming film, Scream 7. He described the situation as “kind of a bummer, ” elaborating on how their departures have inevitably shifted the film’s creative direction.

Originally, Scream 7 (also known as Scream VII) was set to spotlight the characters Sam Carpenter and Tara Carpenter, who were portrayed by Barrera and Ortega, respectively. However, Barrera’s exit was attributed to a series of controversial social media posts related to the Gaza War. Subsequently, Ortega decided to leave as well, citing issues related to Barrera’s departure and the exit of directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from the project.

Following this significant twist, the film’s narrative was restructured, leading to the return of horror icon Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott. Interestingly, Williamson, who was originally a writer for the franchise, found himself stepping into the role of director.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Williamson conveyed his disappointment: “After we lost Melissa and Jenna, and it just looked like we weren’t going to see the Carpenter sisters in a third movie, it was kind of a bummer. It’s like, ‘What do we do next?’”

He then shared how the idea of centering the film around Sidney Prescott was revitalizing: “And then this idea to bring Sidney Prescott back – and not just bring her back, but to focus on her character, tell her story of who she is today – that got really exciting for me. And I think other people got really excited about it.”

Williamson further explained how the creative process unfolded: “Then they started writing a script. Jamie came up with this great story – Jamie Vanderbilt and Guy Busick – and they started to write this script, and it just sort of took on a life of its own. And then Neve read it and heard the pitch, and she signed on. And I was still just the executive producer who was just sort of there, watching from the sidelines.”

In a surprising turn, Campbell encouraged Williamson to take the helm as director: “And then Neve called me one day and said, ‘I think you should direct this.’ And I went, ‘No, no, no, no, no… okay, I’ll do it.’”

Fans can anticipate Scream VII making its debut in theaters on February 27, 2025. This highly anticipated installment is poised to redefine the franchise once again.
