Seasmoke’s New Rider: Addam of Hull’s Background and Targaryen Connection Explained

Rhaenyra Targaryen is in search of riders for unclaimed dragons in House of the Dragon, one of which is Seasmoke. Although her initial choice, Ser Steffon Darklyn, tragically perishes in a fire, Seasmoke shows a strong preference for Addam, eagerly seeking him out and pursuing him.

In the same way as in Fire and Blood, Addam of Hull has become Seasmoke’s latest dragonrider. Despite his limited appearances, Addam quickly developed a close bond with Seasmoke.

Residing on Driftmark, he is a shipwright employed by the House Velaryon fleet.

Despite not being explicitly depicted, the conclusion of House of the Dragon season 2, episode 6 does suggest a bond between the characters, a connection further clarified in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.

Does Addam of Hull have Targaryen Blood?

Hidden in secrecy, this inquiry brings a captivating dimension to the character’s ancestry.

Marilda, mother of Addam Velaryon, inherited Targaryen blood from Prince Daemon Targaryen according to strong rumors. It is believed that Prince Daemon had an affair with the shipwright’s wife, resulting in Marilda’s birth.

It is widely known that Daemon had a strong bond with Corlys and House Velaryon, and he often made trips to Driftmark. Marilda, who was the daughter of a renowned dragon rider, had full faith in her sons’ abilities to tame dragons, which could be attributed to her close connection with Daemon and his frequent visits to Driftmark.

The similarities in personality between Alyn “Oakenfist”Velaryon/Hull and Daemon, combined with their shared ancestry, could be interpreted as a subtle nod from G.R.R. Martin. These parallels add an intriguing depth to the character’s personality and potential familial background.

Marilda claimed that despite Ser Laenor Velaryon’s preference for men, he was still the father of Addam and his brother Alyn.

Mushroom, the court jester, claimed that they were the children of Laenor’s father, Lord Corlys Velaryon, and were kept concealed to prevent any offense to Corlys’s hot-headed wife, Princess Rhaenys Targaryen.

If the bastard theory holds true, it would mean that Laenor and Addam share a common father, making them half-brothers. As Laenor was married to Rhaenerya, there is also a possibility of a Targaryen link.

The sole Targaryen listed in Corlys’ family lineage is Alyssa, his great-aunt on his paternal grandfather’s side. Alyssa was betrothed to King Aenys Targaryen for political reasons, as she shared a close familial connection with the Targaryens.

According to “The World of Ice & Fire,”Alyssa’s mother is identified as a Targaryen, but in “Fire & Blood,”it is revealed that she is actually a Massey. This means that either a Targaryen married into the Massey family, or Alyssa’s father had Targaryen ancestry. Therefore, based on this information, Corlys would be considered 1/8th Targaryen and his two illegitimate sons would only have 1/16th Targaryen blood.

The concept behind the dragon seeds is that one does not require immediate or direct Targaryen ancestry in order to ride a dragon, which Addam proves to be true.

Does House Velaryon Have Dragon Blood?

The Velaryon family is a respected and long-standing lineage that boasts pure Valyrian ancestry. Their lineage predates that of the Targaryens.

Before the Targaryens arrived in Westeros from old Valyria, they had already established themselves on Driftmark Island in the Gullet.

Despite not being as closely linked to dragon riding, some significant members of House Velaryon have still been able to become dragon riders, as depicted in House of the Dragon. The Velaryons, who are descendants of Valyrian blood, are portrayed with either silver-gold or silver hair, as well as purple eyes and occasionally blue or grey-green eyes.

During their time in House of the Dragon, Laena Velaryon flew on the dragon Vhagar, while her brother Laenor Velaryon rode Seasmoke.

During the events of the Dance of the Dragons, Addam formed a partnership with the dragon Seasmoke as Dragonriders were in demand. Following his valor in combat, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen granted legitimacy to both Addam and his brother Alyn, removing the taint of illegitimacy. Addam, who was next in line to inherit House Velaryon of Driftmark, fought alongside Seasmoke for the blacks in the Battle of the Gullet.

3. What Happened to Laenor Velaryon and Addam?

Although Seasmoke’s bond with Addam is not hindered by his blood, the issue lies in the status of Seasmoke’s previous rider. In the House of the Dragon series, Laenor Velaryon is still alive, a change from the books where he had died at the same point in the story. However, it is unclear if this is still the case.

After years of separation, it is believed that Seasmoke has accepted the fact that his former rider will not return and has become restless. Rhaenyra believes that he may have found a new bond, but it is possible that Seasmoke still longs for his former rider, Laenor, who he spent many years with. It is uncertain if this could also mean that Laenor has passed away.

Despite the passage of time, it is possible that Laenor was killed off-screen. However, given that most people believe he is already dead, there is no need for Rhaenyra or anyone else to discover the truth.

The possibility of a dragon accepting a new rider while their previous one is still alive has never been officially confirmed. However, it appears that House of the Dragon either successfully achieved this feat, or Laenor has since passed away.

4. Did Seasmoke and Addam Fight in the Dance of the Dragons?

This paragraph includes references to the blockade and sets up the Battle of the Gullet, which will be featured in season 3 of House of the Dragon.

In season 3, Addam and Seasmoke support Rhaenyra in her conquest of King’s Landing. The dragon is then contained in the Dragonpit and plays a crucial role in defending the city. Subsequently, they participate in the Second Battle of Tumbleton alongside other dragons such as Vermithor and Silverwing.

It is uncertain to what extent House of the Dragon will adhere to the books, however there are definitely more significant events in store for Seasmoke and Addam.
