Season 1 of Skull and Bones obviously didn’t help the game

Season 1 of Skull and Bones appears to have hurt the already struggling game, with many players finding the game even more laborious now.

Skull and Bones hasn’t had the easiest launch. The game, which Ubisoft initially billed as its first “AAAA”title, was not well received, either in reviews or by the gaming community in general. The title, which had been in development for over a decade, launched earlier this month, and there are already concerns about its future.

That said, the game had amassed a dedicated player base who found enjoyment despite the issues. They carved out their existence on the high seas, finding fun in smuggling schemes, and improving their ships.

With Season 1 launching this week as well, many were probably hoping that an influx of content would come to the game and breathe new life into things.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case, at least for some players. Whether it’s because of an annoying new ship type, increased aggression, and difficulty completing routes, the season may have just made things worse for the game.

Season 1 wasn’t the boost Skull and Bones needed

In several threads on Reddit, players express their frustration with the changes in Season 1, and ultimately with the game as a whole. There are especially strong complaints about the increased difficulty of collecting Coins of 8, which is an end-game currency tied to leaderboards.

Unfortunately, the game is unplayable in this moment byu/No_Roma_no_Rocky inSkullAndBonesGame

One user called the game broken, saying: “With this season 1, the game is broken; it is impossible to play. It took me 3 hours to collect half of Africa and half of Red Island when usually it takes me 40 minutes to complete this.”

“Between one outpost and the immediate next, I had to fight 10 armored ships. I collected Parts of 8 then another 4 ships to collect the next one, collected the outpost then another 2, collected then another 4 armored ships.”

One player complained: “The fact that they replaced the level 10 rogue ship with a damn tank that respawns twice as fast is just annoying.”

In another thread, players talked about their dissatisfaction with Season 1, hoping it would bring change, but it didn’t. “Season 1 just came out and it gave us nothing at all to look forward to in my opinion, just some so-so cosmetics, and a ship that for some reason wasn’t already in the game.”

Another commented that they were hoping for fixes to voice settings, but were disappointed: “No fixes for chat and VoIP. No way to communicate in a cooperative multiplayer game. This is my disappointment.” One player simply said: “In the same position as you, I had some hopes for the first season but there is just… nothing.” Another thread echoed this, saying: “I was waiting until today to see if the new season fixed some of the issues the game had, unfortunately they made things much worse.”

Season 1 was not the revitalization some might have hoped for post-launch. Of course, it’s still early for Skull and Bones. Ubisoft has a great history of caring for its games that initially struggle to become long-lasting products like For Honor and Rainbow Six Siege. Hopefully the pirate game can have a similar redemption story.
