Season 31 of Diablo Immortal Invites the Lord of Terror’s Comeback

Diablo, the iconic main antagonist of the franchise, is making a long-awaited return to Diablo Immortal, which could significantly impact the game’s future as well as the overall series.

As Diablo Immortal Season 30 comes to an end and Season 31 approaches, the infamous Lord of Terror, Diablo, is also set to re-emerge. The game has hinted at Diablo’s return for some time now, and a recent post on the official game account on X (formerly Twitter) virtually confirmed his comeback.

The post states, “His presence looms. How will you prepare for Diablo’s return?” along with an image showcasing a fortress overshadowed by Diablo’s menacing silhouette. This marks the first time Diablo has been seen since his defeat in Diablo 3.

Diablo’s return is a natural progression for a series named after him. According to the game’s lore, Diablo and his brothers, Baal and Mephisto, can never truly be killed; they can only be banished back to Hell, where they devise their next schemes.

Although Diablo has been absent from both Immortal and Diablo 4 to allow for a focus on other villains, Immortal is preparing to reintroduce the character—potentially ahead of Diablo 4.

Given that Diablo Immortal is set before the events of Diablo 3, there is plenty of scope for how Diablo will be brought back into the narrative. The third installment saw Diablo suffer a crushing defeat, which led to his absence in Diablo 4, although his return has been hinted at there as well.

Furthermore, since the developers of both games frequently discuss lore and in-game mechanics, Diablo’s resurgence in Immortal could offer insights into how he may return in Diablo 4. This could also tie in with the upcoming Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred DLC, which will feature the return of his brother, Mephisto.

As always, the Lord of Terror will need a vessel to inhabit, suggesting that an unfortunate character will soon become the Vessel of Terror in Diablo Immortal. Depending on who this character is, it could also hint at who may be targeted in Diablo 4, as Diablo often possesses individuals of royal bloodlines.
