Emilia Perez recounts the tale of Manitas, a notorious Mexican drug lord who enlists the aid of lawyer Rita to facilitate his escape and avoid punishment. In order to leave no trace behind, Manitas opts for gender reassignment surgery and a fresh identity. However, it becomes apparent that his true desire to become a woman has been long-standing.

Selena Gomez portrays the wife of the protagonist, Manitas del Monte (portrayed by Karla SofÃa GascÃ³n), in the movie. Her performance has received acclaim from critics who have commended her for effectively portraying the character’s strength and vulnerability.
