Despite no longer being a member of BIGBANG, Seungri is receiving criticism for using the group’s name for personal gain during his appearance at a birthday celebration in Malaysia.
A recently surfaced video featured Seungri attending a birthday celebration in Malaysia, during which he performed the popular song “BANG BANG BANG”with the group. Despite his involvement in multiple illegal activities at the nightclub, Seungri was only given a sentence of a year and a half in prison. He was eventually released on February 9, 2023. The news of Seungri, who has a criminal record, performing a BIGBANG song sparked a variety of responses from netizens.
Despite receiving criticism from certain netizens for attempting to keep connections with BIGBANG and their music, others argued that he may have been asked by the birthday celebrant to perform their songs since the event was a private affair. As a result, he should not be subject to hate.
Despite this, there were those who argued that Seungri should only focus on his solo music and should not be allowed to perform any BIGBANG songs at events. This was seen as a necessary measure to prevent further damage to the group’s reputation.
Despite his career being on the rise, Seungri’s reputation was quickly tarnished in January 2019 when allegations linking him to serious crimes at Burning Sun surfaced. These accusations included allowing staff members and celebrity friends to commit assault and drug customers, as well as accusations of sexual assault, operating a prostitution ring, and tax evasion.
Furthermore, Seungi was implicated in a well-known scandal involving chat rooms with Jung Joon Young. In these online forums, male stars shared illicitly captured videos of themselves engaging in sexual acts or assaulting women.
Shortly after, the news broke that Seungri would be departing from BIGBANG and retiring from the entertainment industry. Initially, YG Entertainment stated that Seungri had made the decision to leave the group and retire on his own accord. However, there were speculations that he had actually been forced out of the agency.
Following his release from prison, Seungri, who was charged with various offenses such as prostitution mediation, gambling, embezzlement, and violations of multiple laws, publicly expressed remorse and vowed to make amends. He also acknowledged the pain he caused to VIPs, his family, BIGBANG, and YG Entertainment.
