The Burning Sun Scandal, which took place in 2018 and lasted for 11 months, was met with frustration as many felt that the punishments given to the perpetrators were not harsh enough. Recently, the scandal has resurfaced for re-examination following the release of BBC’s documentary “Burning Sun: Exposing the secret K-pop chat groups”.
The documentary featured accounts from two entertainment journalists who uncovered and revealed the truth behind the Burning Sun scandal. By showcasing previously unseen footage that exposed the violent and inhumane actions of these controversial celebrities, the documentary sparked renewed backlash from netizens towards the main figure of the case, former BIGBANG member Seungri.
In May 2022, Seungri was sentenced to 18 months in prison by the Seoul High Court for 9 charges, including prostitution, embezzlement, and sexual assault. Despite this, after his release, he has been in contact with many acquaintances and individuals in the entertainment industry. A source cited by SPOTV News reported that Seungri has been making calls in a calm and cheerful tone, asking about their well-being. It seems that even after his time in prison, the former BIGBANG member has not given up on his love for clubbing. According to another source, Seungri is still actively inviting friends and celebrities to join him in partying at clubs on a frequent basis.
According to this individual, “This individual is not going to disappear. Recently, my friend spotted him at Creamfields Hong Kong, which takes place in April. Additionally, I was informed by a friend who works at a club that Seungri intends to stay in Hong Kong for an extended period to establish a business. I am against the idea of him coming to Hong Kong solely for financial gain.”
This netizen also recounted a conversation she had with a friend regarding Seungri. During the conversation, the friend mentioned that Seungri is still on good terms with club owners and wine suppliers, and it appears to be related to his business. The friend also remarked that women who have had plastic surgery or are gold diggers often try to catch his attention during these interactions.
Rumors about Seungri’s intention to open a new club quickly circulated online, causing outrage among netizens. Many expressed their anger, with some stating, “It seems like he plans to spend his entire life in Hong Kong. I hope women will steer clear of him,”and “I fear he will continue his involvement in illegal activities such as drug and prostitution. It’s outrageous. He has no shame! He even performed BIGBANG songs at events and boasted about bringing G-Dragon to parties. Should he be released from prison so soon?”Others questioned if he plans to repeat his offenses in Hong Kong.
On November 24th, 2018, a man named Kim Sang-kyo was assaulted at Burning Sun, a club in Gangnam owned by Seungri. The attack occurred when he intervened to help a woman who was being sexually harassed. Following the incident, the police launched an investigation into Burning Sun, uncovering numerous other criminal activities. The most shocking revelation was the discovery of a group chat involving male singer Jung Joon-young, where he shared sexually explicit videos and illegally filmed footage of women with his friends.
