Seungyeon’s Decision to Not Pursue K-Pop Stardom

Despite being a popular SM trainee and almost debuting with Red Velvet, Gong Seungyeon ultimately chose not to become a K-pop idol. She recently revealed the reason behind her decision.

On June 13, several Korean news sources, such as Star News and News1, interviewed Gong Seungyeon, the lead actress in the upcoming movie “Handsome Guys.”

In this conversation, Gong discussed a variety of topics, including the primary factor that prevented her from debuting as an idol despite being trained by SM Entertainment, one of the “Big 3″agencies.

While she was training with Girls’ Generation, she was also getting ready to make her debut with Red Velvet. However, during her time as an idol trainee, she discovered her passion for acting and ended up making her acting debut before her singing one. This eventually led to her departure from SM in 2012.

In 2014, two years after Red Velvet’s debut, fans often express their regrets that she could have been the next “Power Siblings”with her younger sister, TWICE’s Jeongyeon, who debuted in 2015.

Despite the fact that there are idols who also pursue acting, Gong Seungyeon explained her decision to forgo her dream of becoming a K-pop idol and instead pursue a career as a professional actress.

“Actually, I felt my limits while I was an idol trainee. I had many friends who were very good at it, but I was mediocre at both dancing and singing. I wanted to be special, and I thought I had to find something else to survive, so I got into acting.”

In 2012, she made her acting debut with supporting roles in TV dramas such as “I Love Lee Tae Ri,””My Lovely Girl,””Heard It Through the Grapevine,”and “Six Flying Dragons.”

Seungyeon came to the realization that by doing this:

“I realized acting was more fun than dancing. I felt like I would be happier if I acted, and I thought I would be less hurt. When I also decided to attend university, I naturally became distant from being a singer and I don’t regret that.”

Despite being asked about her future plans in music, Gong Seungyeon denied having any interest in pursuing it, stating:

“I like acting. I was just thinking about my character a while ago, and I liked myself doing that. Recently, I even dreamed of being the character when I was sleeping. It’s fun to be able to immerse myself in a role like this, and I want to live as many different characters. It got me thinking.”

Following her departure from SM, she went on to secure leading roles in various dramas and gained recognition for her exceptional performances in popular projects like “Circle,””My Only Love Song,”and “Are You Human, Too?”She also starred in “Flower Crew: Jeoseon Marriage,””Bulgasal,”and “The First Responders.”
