Seven Arcs dominates in Failure Frame episode 9: A flawless review of the series’ first perfect installment

The latest installment of Failure Frame, which was officially released on Thursday, September 5, 2024, can be described as a collection of individual strengths rather than a cohesive whole. Each episode leading up to the release of episode 9 showcased exceptional qualities in specific areas, but it wasn’t until this latest installment that all of these elements were brought together to create a truly brilliant episode.

In Failure Frame episode 9, all major aspects of the narrative – character development, romance, action, and plot advancement – are executed with excellence. Although the voice acting may not be remarkable, it is not enough to detract from the overall perfection of the episode.

In order to illustrate why Failure Frame episode 9 can be considered a flawless release, it is important to first mention the elements that the series had consistently altered between up to this point. Throughout the season, each installment had either prioritized action or focused on worldbuilding and progressing the plot. However, it was rare for Seven Arcs to successfully blend both aspects in one episode, making episode 9 a commendable achievement in terms of overall execution.

The introduction of Episode 9 seamlessly blends worldbuilding and action, providing answers to questions about the Curse Users of Ashint while also revealing their involvement in larger plans. The back-and-forth between story and action in this sequence effectively engages viewers, making the first half of the episode pass by quickly.

In episode 9 of Failure Frame, there are moments of character development intertwined with the action. One such moment is when Seras Ashrain takes charge and fights the enemy to save Touka Mimori’s life. This act leads to Touka naming her the vice captain of their group. This subtle yet impactful moment highlights the growing comfort, respect, and value between the two characters.

During the opening action sequence, attention is also placed on the dynamic between Eve Speed and Touka. Despite their roles as combatants in this context, it showcases their ability to seamlessly cooperate and solidifies their position as the primary fighters in future battles. Meanwhile, Seras and Lisbeth offer support from the sidelines. The chemistry between Eve and Touka is evident, endearing viewers to both of them as a unit and to Eve as an individual.

In the ninth episode of Failure Frame, Eve Speed confronts Duke Zuan, which provides her with some individual character development. Although it is a brief interaction, it adds depth to Eve’s personality and sheds light on her values and beliefs. Furthermore, her decision to guide Touka and the others to the Witch of Taboos suggests that her character development is just beginning and will likely be a major focus going forward.

Although Lisbeth’s name has not been mentioned, it is important to note that she lacks any notable combat skills or value. However, after the battle, the attention immediately shifts to her as she bonds briefly with Seras. This brief moment effectively solidifies Seras’ kindness and Lisbeth’s admiration for both Touka and Seras. While Lisbeth’s role may become more defined in the future, her current character development is being executed exceptionally well.

In the ninth episode of Failure Frame, the focus shifts towards the relationship between Seras and Touka. As commander and subordinate, they also share a romantic connection that is evident as they fall in love with each other. The beauty of this development lies in its organic nature, without any forced elements. It is clear that Seras and Touka share a genuine connection, unaffected by the lust potion from episode 7. Their feelings for each other run deep and are truly genuine.

Despite only lasting for two-and-a-half minutes in the episode, the focus on Seras and Touka’s relationship is incredibly effective. This speaks to the naturalness of their bond and the depth of their love for each other, particularly evident in Seras’ unwavering support for Touka’s quest for revenge. If the series is renewed, the director’s decision to showcase their interactions and feelings should definitely be kept.

Despite containing plenty of action and character development, Failure Frame episode 9 also manages to include significant progress in the plot and setup for future events. As previously mentioned, the deaths of the Curse Users of Ashint foreshadow a new storyline that will likely be explored before the season concludes. Additionally, there is a moment where Touka reflects on his desire for revenge, solidifying his commitment to Seras and the others. This further demonstrates his genuine concern for their well-being.

Nevertheless, the episode’s main plot development revolves around Goddess Vicius and the summoned heroes. It is unveiled that they will soon journey to the Land of Golden-Eyed Monsters, laying the foundation for an intense showdown between Touka, his past comrades, his present comrades, and the Goddess. This masterfully executed setup serves as a captivating cliffhanger, leaving viewers eagerly anticipating the official release of episode 10 in a week’s time.

Additionally, it should be noted that there are no significant drawbacks to mention beyond what has already been discussed. While the voice acting may not have been exceptional, it was still satisfactory and supported by the positive aspects mentioned earlier. The animation was consistent and well-done, though not particularly outstanding or impressive. However, it is worth noting that there were no major errors and the use of CGI animation was not noticeable throughout the film, preventing it from becoming a true negative.
