On October 29th, Seungkwan took to his social media to express his sentiments, stating, “I wish to see no more harm done to anyone. As I observed the ongoing events, I kept reassuring myself, ‘This too shall pass,’ while I suppressed my emotions and remained dedicated to working alongside my fellow members, as is my nature.”
He elaborated, saying, “Choosing to be a celebrity comes with its hardships, and although being showered with affection entails some trials, I don’t believe it should demand that one suffer to the point of nearly breaking down. Despite the challenges, we must persevere. Some approach this situation with logic, others maintain a positive facade, and many find themselves battling their circumstances, yet they strive to adapt and thrive. Just because I opted for this lifestyle doesn’t mean I should carry the weight of everything—such expectations feel especially harsh and insensitive today.”
Seungkwan expressed, “I want to make this very clear: we are not individuals to be easily evaluated or gossiped about. I hope idols are regarded with greater seriousness.”
Further, he asserted, “You have no claim to intrude upon our narratives. This applies not just to us, but to all artists—we are not commodities for your enjoyment. Please don’t presume you can exploit us at your convenience.”
Seungkwan’s remarks are being viewed as a pointed critique of his agency, HYBE. Recently, it came to light that HYBE, the management company for SEVENTEEN, had prepared an internal document evaluating the physical attributes of idol group members, including those underage, igniting significant backlash.
Along with his thoughts, Seungkwan also shared a handwritten note from NMIXX’s Haewon. In her letter, she expressed, “I believe that nothing is more challenging yet rewarding than instilling joy and laughter in others. In that regard, as an artist and television personality, you provide numerous gifts to the public, far exceeding what many offer. I aspire to develop my ability to share my genuine feelings with others as well.”
