Severance Actor Reluctant to Film Marching Band Scene Due to “Iconic” Moment from Season 1

One of the most talked-about moments from the Severance Season 2 finale features Mr. Milchick showcasing his dance moves, a scene that star Tramell Tillman initially hesitated to perform.(Spoiler alert ahead!)

The finale was a dynamic episode that revealed critical insights into Lumon’s motives, focusing primarily on their objective of eradicating negative emotions, particularly those experienced by Gemma.

In a gripping turn of events, both Innie Mark and Outie Mark join forces to rescue Gemma from Lumon, culminating in a bittersweet conclusion where Mark chooses to leave her behind, embarking on an uncertain journey with Helly R.

However, before this poignant climax, the episode features an extravagant dance number, including a lively marching band, as Mr. Milchick celebrates Mark’s successful mission in Cold Harbor. Surprisingly, Tillman felt apprehensive about participating in this scene due to the fear of overshadowing a memorable dance sequence from Season 1.

Tramell Tillman’s Reluctance to Dance in the Finale

In an interview with Variety, Tillman candidly expressed his initial reluctance to engage in the pivotal dance sequence. His primary concern was ensuring that Milchick’s previous “defiant jazz” performance remained unique and impactful.

“I did not want to do it, ” Tillman stated.“When I heard about the possibility, I approached a few creators to express my concerns. I didn’t want Milchick to be associated with dance performances every season. The Music Dance Experience is iconic and should not be replicated.”

Ultimately, Tillman’s mind changed upon hearing that a marching band would be featured in the finale. This detail resonated deeply with him, recalling his university experiences.

“Ben informed me about the marching band, ” he explained.“I attended two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), including Jackson State University, known for the ‘Sonic Boom of the South.’ Watching them was an awe-inspiring experience that showcased exceptional athleticism and creativity on both the musicians’ and dancers’ parts.”

“When I learned a marching band was involved, I was intrigued. I asked Ben about the style: would it be military or HBCU? Initially, he wasn’t sure, so I inquired about how I could contribute—was I to be the band director or the drum major?”

“I assured myself that if the style was HBCU, like Jackson State, I would step in as the drum major.”

The collaboration resulted in a festive, engaging dance sequence that has since garnered significant attention across social media platforms. Tillman now describes the scene as “epic” and “so much fun.”
