Prepare for an exhilarating journey in the MDR team’s first Outdoor Retreat and Team Building Occurrence (ORTBO) in Season 2, Episode 4 of Severance. This episode promises a shocking reveal that viewers will not soon forget.
Reflecting back, Episode 3 concluded with a riveting cliffhanger as Mark exclaimed, “She’s alive, ” reminiscent of the dramatic moments from the first season. After a heartfelt reunion with Asal Reghabi, Mark found his split identities merging in the series’ tense finale.
Initial discussions among the cast and early reviews have positioned Episode 4 as a standout in the new season, suggesting that it ventures boldly into uncharted territory for the series.
The anticipation was justified. This episode dismantles the established order, thrusting the Innies into the outside world for a transformative experience that has far-reaching implications.
The Innies Embark on Their First ORTBO
The episode kicks off with the familiar ding of an elevator, yet the scene is far from the office confines. Irving’s Innie emerges in a snowy landscape, resembling a Russian operative, and quickly realizes he’s isolated — that is, until he catches sight of Mark on a cliff, leading to an unforgettable exchange: “Where are we?” “I have no f**king idea, ” Mark responds.
As Irving climbs towards Mark, he encounters Helly (or perhaps Helena?).Upon reaching the summit, they are greeted by Dylan, who bursts out hilariously from behind a bush, exclaiming, “Holy sh*t, out-f**king-side! I knew there was no actual ceiling, but this is f**king insane!”
Their attention soon shifts to a television set situated at the cliff’s edge. Much like a classroom projector, it displays Mr. Milchick, who welcomes them with an unexpected announcement.
“Good morning, refiners. I’m Mr. Milchick, and I’m delighted to introduce your inaugural outdoor retreat and team-building occurrence, ” he declares.“This ORTBO caters to your curiosity about the outside world. With your Outies’ approval, you will explore the Dieter Eagan National Forest over the next two days.”
Dylan’s bewildered query about Dieter Eagan is met with further intrigue from Milchick: “Curious minds may wish to explore the truth in the elusive fourth appendix, composed in Kier’s final moments. This sacred text is accessible in Scissor Cave, the site where Kier first tamed the Four Tempers.” He warns them not to stray from Kier’s path lest they provoke nature’s wrath.
The Discovery of Scissor Cave and the Fourth Appendix

As the group sets off, they encounter what appears to be an animatronic figure resembling Mark, pointing them toward Scissor Cave. Strangely, there are no opening credits, leaving the audience captivated by the unfolding adventure.
While navigating the unfamiliar terrain, they spot Helly’s Innie duplicate directing them to their destination. Inside Scissor Cave, they discover a tome marked with “IV, ” serving as the fabled fourth appendix. Helly reads aloud, revealing a poignant relationship with her twin brother, Dieter, from whom she was inseparable in infancy.
As the narrative continues, Irving speculates that the ORTBO’s mission is to retrace Dieter’s steps and ultimately locate a mystical waterfall.
The Quest for Woe’s Hollow Sparks Distrust
The team moves towards their goal, Woe’s Hollow, with Irving narrating from the appendix, describing Dieter’s ethereal connection with nature. However, tension brews as Irving expresses his doubts about Helly’s motivations, particularly regarding her vision of a night gardener.
Their trek through the woods becomes more fraught when they stumble upon a peculiar dead creature by a creek. Irving advocates for eating it, highlighting their uncertainty about food supplies at Woe’s Hollow, but his suggestions are dismissed as irrational.
Milchick’s Unsettling Surprise
Upon arriving at Woe’s Hollow, the Innies are met with a surprise as Milchick suddenly appears, dramatically revealing that this location boasts the tallest waterfall in the world. After some playful banter, he ushers them to their camping area, where Miss Huang is preparing an extravagant feast.
Amidst the campfire festivities, Helly playfully crafts a “snow seal” for Irving, easing tensions following their earlier confrontation. However, Irving’s suspicions regarding Helly grow as he confronts her about her true experiences during the Outdoor Team-building Course (OTC).
The Myth of the Four Tempers Unfolds

As the night progresses, Milchick reads another chapter from the fourth appendix, delving deeper into the mythos of Dieter and the Four Tempers. He describes a haunting encounter where Dieter, plagued by dread, perceives a grotesque transformation.
Irving, seeking solace in the story, questions whether this represents Dieter’s actual demise. However, Helly irreverently comments on the tale, challenging its seriousness, which infuriates Milchick and leads to a comical punishment — incinerating their marshmallows.
An Unexpected Intimacy Between Mark and Helly
With Milchick and Miss Huang departing, a more relaxed atmosphere allows Mark, Helly, and Dylan to bond by the fire. Tensions escalate when Irving calls out Mark for his obvious affection towards Helly, leading to an emotional confrontation.
Following the tension, Mark checks on Helly in her tent, and a heartfelt conversation ensues, culminating in an intimate moment that fans eagerly anticipated. After sharing a passionate encounter, Helly reveals she struggled with her identity on the outside, a moment filled with vulnerability.
As the episode progresses, Mark reassures Helly that her past doesn’t define her, pledging to support her in their journey together.
The Truth of Helly’s Identity Revealed
In a dramatic shift, Irving wanders into the woods, sensing a disturbance. Realizing he’s dreaming, he confronts unsettling visions of his work life and the spectral bride from the appendix. Upon awakening, he discovers Helly missing, prompting a frantic search.
Irving ultimately finds her at Woe’s Hollow and confronts her about her identity, inferring that she is, in fact, an Eagan. In a moment of desperation, he attempts to drown her in the creek, demanding Milchick reveal the truth. With Helly pushing back and pleading for help, Milchick intervenes, reestablishing Helly’s true identity while shrouded in mystery.
The Consequences of Irving’s Actions
Irving’s violent actions lead to dire consequences. Milchick declares that Irving faces immediate expulsion, prefacing it with an ominous warning that it will be as if he never existed. While Dylan regrets the outcome, Irving assures him that all is well, embodying an acceptance of his fate.
Milchick delivers his formal verdict with chilling finality, instructing Irving to leave and never return to his colleagues, marking a pivotal moment in the series as the screen fades to black.
