Shakatak’s Chatroom regarding Alleged Plagiarism of NewJeans

There has been a recent spread of online discussions surrounding the leaked “Shakatak Chat Logs”posts in various online communities.

The disclosed messenger chat contains phrases such as, “We should speed up the process and send the content certification on 6/17 to initiate the attack. There is no point in delaying if we are already going to court. Additionally, we must be ready for the battle of public opinion,”and “The truth of the plagiarism is irrelevant to us. Our objective is to bring up an external matter. The most favorable result would be if ADOR suggests a settlement to avoid significant problems.”

While these messages may give the impression that Shakatak is using NewJeans as a publicity stunt, they are actually a satirical take on leaked KakaoTalk conversations from last April. These conversations came to light during the clash between ADOR’s CEO Min Hee-jin and HYBE.

In the previous month, Shakatak, a British band, requested reparation for losses connected to the song “Bubblegum”by NewJeans. They filed an official grievance with ADOR, HYBE, the Korea Music Copyright Association, and the Korea branch of Sony Music Publishing Hong Kong Ltd.

Shakatak’s legal team has officially stated that they have verified the unauthorized use of their song “Easier Said Than Done”in NewJeans’ track “Bubblegum.”They are demanding prompt action to be taken, which includes ceasing the use of “Bubblegum.”

They also discussed taking legal measures to halt usage, submit revenue reports, modify rights, provide written assurances, and receive compensation for damages.

As the issue of plagiarism gained attention, ADOR released a statement to Exports News, explaining that they had received a content certification from Shakatak on June 17 and had responded to their legal team on June 21. ADOR maintained that their song “Bubblegum”did not unlawfully use Shakatak’s composition and requested a credible analysis report on the matter.

Additionally, ADOR pointed out that Shakatak had promised to deliver the report in the near future, but it has yet to be received. The party who raised the plagiarism issue is responsible for providing the report as evidence, and Shakatak is expected to respond accordingly.

Shakatak announced on their official social media accounts on July 19 that they had submitted the “credible analysis report”as requested by ADOR. They further explained that their publishing company, Wise Music Group, is managing the case and has enlisted the help of a musicologist for further investigation. The band promised to provide updates as the situation progresses.

Shakatak is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the plagiarism allegations. If the allegations are found to be true, this could have a serious impact on NewJeans’ ongoing promotions. However, it should be noted that taking legal action and proving plagiarism in court is a lengthy and costly process.
