On October 24, a video titled “Kim Soo-mi is in grave danger… I can see the Grim Reaper for Kim Soo-mi… How will she survive from now?” was posted on a shaman’s YouTube channel.
This 8-minute clip, which featured the shaman’s contact information, attracted significant attention, amassing over 240,000 views by 4 PM on October 26.
As the buzz grew, it came to light that the video, which purportedly “predicted Kim Soo-mi’s death,” has been modified shortly after the announcement of her passing. The title and thumbnail were adjusted to suggest that the shaman had foretold her demise.
Contrary to its alarming title, the video contents did not align with the sensationalized claims and instead conveyed a prediction of great success for Kim Soo-mi’s career in the upcoming year, further igniting anger among the audience.
Viewers expressed their outrage online, stating, “Exploiting someone’s death in this way is shameful,” “Don’t be deceived; the title was altered for drama,” “The video even noted that she would have a prosperous career next year,” and “Are they really trying to profit from her passing?”
In response to the criticism, the channel’s manager decided to disable the comment section.
The operator of the channel refuted claims of altering the title after the news broke, asserting that the shaman had indeed indicated Kim Soo-mi’s passing, but made edits to ease the video’s impact, as reported by Hankook Ilbo on October 25.
A YouTuber associated with the channel stated, “The shaman referred to Kim Soo-mi’s death on several occasions, but we edited many segments for caution. Yes, the title was provocative, but we didn’t change it. The video also mentioned that excessive good fortune could imply a calm passing.”
Notwithstanding the backlash, the channel persisted in releasing more content pertaining to Kim Soo-mi’s passing. On October 26, a new video featuring a different shaman was uploaded.
This new shaman interpreted Kim Soo-mi’s destiny, declaring that “76 was the optimal age for her health” and referred to her as a “person with spiritual abilities.”
Kim Soo-mi sadly passed away on the morning of October 25, having been found in cardiac arrest at her residence. Although she was rushed to the hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Her wake is currently being held at the Funeral Hall of Hanyang University Hospital in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, with her funeral scheduled for October 27 at 11 AM at Honor Stone, Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.
