The Emmy Awards were held on the morning of September 16th (KST) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. As a prestigious event recognized as the Academy Awards of the U.S. television industry, the Emmy Awards are categorized into the Primetime Emmy Awards, which celebrate the achievements of actors and directors, and the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which honor technical and production teams.
Among the most highly anticipated nominations from Korea was Robert Downey Jr.‘s for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his performance in The Sympathizer, directed by acclaimed Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. While Downey’s multifaceted portrayal of four characters garnered significant attention, he ultimately lost the award to Lamorne Morris for his role in Fargo.
Korean-American actress Greta Lee was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in The Morning Show, yet she was outdone by Elizabeth Debicki of The Crown.
Additionally, the documentary Beyond Utopia, featuring insights from Korean-American expert Sue Mi Terry, received a nomination in the category of Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, though it did not secure a win.
The standout winner of the night was Disney+‘s Shōgun, which dominated with a total of 18 wins, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. This incredible achievement made it the most awarded production in Emmy history. When Hiroyuki Sanada received the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, he was presented the trophy by Korean-American actor Steven Yeun. Sanada expressed his appreciation for the collaborative effort behind Shōgun, highlighting its role in bridging East and West.
