Shindong Reveals Super Junior Was Meant to Disband After 3 Months: ‘I Don’t Have to Sing’

Despite Shindong’s statement during a show that Super Junior was not expected to have a long-lasting career of 20 years, he also revealed that the group almost broke up just three months after their debut.

On June 20, Seo In Guk’s official YouTube channel released the latest episode of his talk show, “Skipping Interlude,”which had Super Junior’s Shindong and Ryeowook as the special guests, as seen on Naver Entertainment.

The two members made an appearance on this day to promote the group’s newest single, “Show Time,”which was launched on June 11th.

Seo In Guk inquired during the broadcast about the group’s longevity, as they are now in their 20th year since their debut in 2005.

Ryeowook and Shindong both provided answers:

“Contract? Because we signed contract. That’s a must. If someone didn’t sign the contract, we wouldn’t be able to do this.”

Shindong stated:

“In some ways, I think we know ourselves well. That only as Super Junior can we shine brighter. We know this. I don’t think it’s going to work out if I do it alone.”

At that moment, MC Seo mentioned that in addition to their success in the music industry, Super Junior is also well-known in the entertainment world for their talent in variety shows.

Despite the original intention of the question being to offer advice to the actor for improving her hosting skills on her YouTube channel, Shindong instead shared an intriguing anecdote about the initial concept of Super Junior – the idea of disbanding after only three months.

He recounted:

“You know what? The first time I joined Super Junior was as a variety show member. This may or may not be known to everyone, but Super Junior’s first album was called ‘Super Junior 05.’

The 12 of us will become singers, and release an album and those who act will act, and those who do variety shows, would do it.

After three months, the concept was to disperse, just for 3 months. We only did it for 3 months.”

The idols explained that their group was expected to follow a rotational system, where a new album would be released each year with the addition of new members. It was planned that ‘Super Junior 06’ would be introduced in 2006, regardless of whether or not any of the original members from the 2005 lineup would remain.

Upon hearing Shindong’s intentions to debut as a variety show member, he explained that there was no need for him to sing in their first album.

“When I first joined, for this concept, I didn’t have to sing. So in the first album, there wasn’t my voice at all. (When) the photo was first revealed, (people asked), ‘How good is he at singing so that he can be under SM?’

But I didn’t appear at all at the stage. It was a fun element at first.”

Finally, Shindong responded to Seo’s inquiry about how to enhance his hosting abilities by saying,

“I appeared at ‘Reckless Challenge,’ and when I watched the broadcast, I didn’t even show even one word. I did so badly. How I overcame this after that was that I became more comfortable with people.

So after that, whenever I was on a variety show, I always went into the waiting room. So whether there were three or five people, I continued to talk to them. I did this so that I became more comfortable.”
