A BBC documentary about the Burning Sun scandal was released on May 19. Titled “Burning Sun – Exposing The Secret K-pop Chat Groups,”the film revealed numerous undisclosed details about the disturbing 2019 incident.
Kwon Hyuk Jun, the older brother of Girls’ Generation’s Yuri, was another individual involved in the infamous scandal alongside Seungri, Jung Joon Young, and Choi Jong Hoon. The documentary exposed even more heinous acts committed by Kwon Hyuk Jun.
Horrific Crimes Unveiled: Drugging, Raping, and Molka
According to reports from journalist Kang Kyung Yoon, Kwon Hyuk Jun was among the group of friends associated with Choi Jong Hoon. It is alleged that Yuri’s brother accompanied Choi Jong Hoon and several girls on a trip to a ski resort where he allegedly drugged, raped, and filmed the girls.
“Kang Kyung Yoon revealed that the girls had shared drinks and subsequently experienced a memory lapse. During this time, they were unknowingly recorded. One of the photographs was taken from the ground floor, looking up at the first floor.”
The group of five men filmed Yuri’s brother sexually assaulting a girl. “Another video depicted a man and a woman engaging in sexual activity through an open door, treated as a joke. Messages exchanged in Jung Joon Young and Choi Jong Hoon’s group chat suggested that the girl was raped while she was unconscious. Kang Kyung Yoon stated that she possesses sufficient evidence to suspect that the women were entirely unaware of the assault.
Upon his arrest, Kwon Hyuk Jun’s initial statement was that he had joined the business chat group due to his previous partnership with Seungri in the Mildang Pocha bar.
He later issued a public apology, expressing his hope that his actions would not have a negative impact on his loved ones: “I take full responsibility for my mistakes and I deeply regret the pain I have caused. I am burdened with guilt every day and I acknowledge that my negligence was the root cause. I want to make amends and strive to be a better person in my relationship with my fiancÉe, my family, and my famous sister. I am ready to face the consequences of my actions and make things right for the victims who have suffered permanent and irreparable harm.”
Short Prison Sentence and Attempted New Life Spark Public Outrage
Upon completion of the investigation and trial, Kwon Hyuk Jun, along with fellow Burning Sun employee “Kim”and former employee “Heo,”were indicted for gang rape, as well as the recording and dissemination of lewd videos. The prosecution pushed for a 10-year incarceration for Kwon Hyuk Jun, the longest sentence among the five defendants on trial.
Kwon Hyuk Jun was found guilty of involvement in sexual assault and illegal chat group activities in November 2019. Despite being originally sentenced to 10 years in prison, the sentence was unexpectedly reduced to 4 years. Kwon Hyuk Jun appealed this decision to the Seoul High Court, but his appeal was denied and he will serve the full 4-year sentence. Currently, Yuri’s brother remains incarcerated and is expected to be released in 4 months.
Despite being sentenced to 4 years in prison, Kwon Hyuk Jun will only serve 4 months before being released. In 2019, he legally changed his name to Kwon Yeon Oh, which was perceived as an attempt to start fresh and reinvent himself. This has sparked public anger due to his short sentence and efforts to conceal his identity. Additionally, his sister Yuri has also faced consequences for her brother’s actions, damaging her reputation.
Prior to his sentencing, Kwon Hyuk Jun worked as an office employee and aspired to become a singer. Despite not being a well-known figure, he had previously made an appearance on the show “I Can See Your Voice,”gaining widespread attention. However, no one could have predicted that beneath his kind demeanor, he was involved in unforgivable crimes with Seungri.
