Silk: Spider Society TV series mysteriously scrapped at Amazon after bizarre changes

The expanding world of Spider-Man media will persist with the release of new movies, TV shows, and games. However, it has been reported that one particular expansion, Silk: Spider Society, has been canceled.

The main focus of Silk: Spider-Society was on Cindy Moon, a Korean-American student who gains her own spider abilities and takes on the superhero name Silk.

Despite facing numerous relaunches, delays, and obstacles, the series was heavily affected by the 2023 Writer’s Strikes. According to Deadline, the show was eventually cancelled, but the bizarre twists do not end there.

Despite numerous revisions, Spider Society’s production team struggled to get a script green-lit, resulting in the creation of three different versions. One of the versions reportedly did not center around Silk as the main character.

The cancellation of Silk: Spider Society has not been explained, and there has been no mention of a potential version of the show that would have featured its title character in a supporting role rather than as the main focus.

This could potentially be a result of previous efforts to extend the Spider-Man franchise beyond its main character.

Despite the success of the MCU Spider-Man and Sony’s Spider-Verse films, other attempts such as Morbius and Madame Web have only been ridiculed and turned into memes.

Despite being a relatively niche character, Silk’s popularity has grown in recent years. In the comics, Cindy gains her powers after being bitten by the same spider that gave Peter Parker his abilities. To keep her safe, the enigmatic Ezekiel Sims isolates her for several years.

A Cindy variant has made a brief appearance in the MCU, however it remains uncertain if this version would be a fresh interpretation or a continuation of the Spider Society version. Most recently, she was hinted at in the post-credits scene of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, though it remains unknown if or how she will play a role in the franchise’s future.

Despite the apparent cancellation of Silk: Spider Society, there is still much to anticipate. Nicholas Cage is set to reprise his role as Spider-Man Noir in a live-action Prime Video series, while the highly-anticipated Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse and MCU’s Spider-Man 4 are on the horizon.
