Sims competitor Life by You suddenly canceled after several delays

Publisher Paradox Interactive has decided to cancel the release of the life simulation game Life by You, after experiencing three delays during the early access phase.

Paradox Tectonic, the developers of the game Sims, first announced their upcoming life simulation game Life by You in March 2023. The project was led by former Sims executive Rod Humble and aimed to offer a level of complexity that has yet to be seen in the genre.

The developer had planned for players to have early access to Life by You in September 2023. However, the release of this version of the simulation experience was delayed three times.

On May 20, 2024, Paradox Interactive announced a third delay for their new game, with no mention of a revised release date. However, on June 17, the company confirmed the cancellation of Life by You in a Twitter/X post, providing an explanation to the public.

In a statement released on the Paradox Forum, the Deputy CEO of the publisher, Mattias Lilja, acknowledged that the decision to cancel “Life by You”was a challenging one and admitted that it was a disappointment for both Paradox and the community. He recognized it as a clear failure on the part of Paradox to live up to the expectations set by both parties.

Lilja explained that Life by You’s various postponements were intended to provide developers with the opportunity to fully realize their vision. She went on to elaborate, stating that the incremental improvements seen with each delay may have shifted the company’s focus towards smaller details rather than the overall picture.

Upon closer examination, the executive revealed that the third early access delay was due to the team’s desire to thoroughly reevaluate Life by You as a whole. After careful consideration, it became clear that the team believed the path to releasing a product they could truly be proud of was too lengthy and uncertain.

The announcement of You’s cancellation marks the end of Life by You, slightly over five years after Paradox Tectonic was founded in 2019. The studio’s future projects remain undisclosed at this time.
