Kody Brown, known from the reality TV show Sister Wives, has faced numerous accusations of serious lies and deflections over the years. Since its debut in 2010, Sister Wives has brought polygamous relationships into the spotlight of reality television.
Kody serves as the patriarch of the family, alongside his three wives: Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown. After establishing their family unit, they subsequently welcomed Robyn Brown as their fourth wife. The inaugural season centered on the family’s courtship and eventual wedding with Robyn.
As Sister Wives progresses into its 19th season, it highlights the unraveling of Kody’s relationships with his first three wives, nearly two decades after the show’s launch.
Christine grew weary of neglect from Kody and ultimately chose to end their marriage after he expressed that they could no longer maintain an intimate relationship. Soon, the cracks in Kody’s relationships with Janelle and Meri became evident, prompting both to leave him. Additionally, Kody’s relationship with Robyn has also faced significant challenges post-divorce, and he might need to abandon the dishonesty to mend it.
1. Did Kody Lie About His Marriage With Robyn?
Kody was accused of being dishonest about his marriage with Robyn. Before Sister Wives season 19 premiered, TLC shared a promotional video on Instagram featuring the cast participating in a word association exercise.
When prompted with the word “marriage,” Kody described it as “the source of all joy.” Similarly, when asked about “family,” he responded that it reminded him of “the source of all joy and all pain.” Fans quickly called out Kody in the comments after the season 19 trailer hinted at troubles in his marriage with Robyn.
2. Did Kody Con His Ex-Wives?
Kody frequently manipulated his ex-wives to believe they were the problem within their marriages and the overall family dynamics. Meri’s relationship deteriorated significantly after she was involved in a catfishing scandal, thinking she was connecting with a genuine individual.
After discovering she had been deceived, Kody found it impossible to trust Meri again, despite her enduring years of mistreatment beforehand.
When accused of infidelity, Meri made great efforts to reconcile their marriage, while Kody did not reciprocate. Kody misled Meri to think they had a chance at reviving their love but failed to make any arrangements for their thirty-second wedding anniversary.
Meri attempted to invite him to dinner, which he initially avoided, stating he was tired of “faking relationships.” Conversely, Kody criticized Christine for her actions as Robyn’s sister wife.
Kody began spending more time with Robyn as his intimacy with Christine waned. Even though he publicly claimed he didn’t have a favorite wife, Christine often referred to Robyn as such.
During discussions concerning their diminishing intimacy, Kody remarked that he had no desire for a sexual relationship with Christine, labeling her a poor sister-wife.
3. How is Kody’s Relationship with His Kids?
The outbreak of COVID-19 had a detrimental effect on Kody’s relationships with his children. He notably clashed with Janelle’s sons, believing they were showing disrespect by not adhering to the safety guidelines he had established for the family.
While asserting that he was working to mend his relationships with his children, Janelle revealed he had given them an “ultimatum” to apologize to him and Robyn in order to improve their relationship. “He hasn’t made an effort. He still acts like they need to come to him,” Janelle stated.
Regrettably, Kody’s bond with his children has further deteriorated. He also made the distressing choice not to attend the scoliosis surgery of his and Christine’s daughter, Ysabel.
Kody was concerned about contracting COVID-19 and potentially infecting one of his children with Robyn while attending the surgery; this may have merely been an excuse to avoid spending time with Christine.
His recent deceitful actions have turned Sister Wives fans against him. After years of gaslighting Meri, Janelle, and Christine, the women ultimately chose to leave him behind, opting for a monogamous life with Robyn. Kody seems to forget that his comments and actions are recorded for the show, which leads him into a cycle of lies and misdirection.
4. About Sister Wives
Sister Wives is an American reality television series aired on TLC that first premiered on September 26, 2010. The series chronicles the life of a polygamous family comprising Kody Brown, his wife Robyn (née Sullivan), and ex-wives Meri (née Barber), Janelle (née Schriever), and Christine (née Allred), along with their 18 children (1 by Meri, 6 by both Janelle and Christine, and 5 by Robyn, with 3 of those from her previous marriage to David Preston Jessop).
The family began their journey in Lehi, Utah, transitioned to Las Vegas in 2011, and later moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, in mid-2018.[1]
Brown and his four wives have stated that their participation in the series aims to raise awareness about polygamist families and combat societal stigma. Brown claims that his polygamous setup is legal since he is only legally married to one woman (Meri, and later Robyn) whereas the other unions are considered “spiritual marriages.”
