Despite NCT’s Renjun leaking a number on Bubble and claiming to have received a call from a sasaeng, SM Entertainment is facing criticism for their response to the situation.
On June 21, SM Entertainment issued a statement regarding NCT’s Renjun’s actions on Bubble, where he shared a phone number and identified the sender as a sasaeng attempting to contact him.
Following the leak of their number, the individual promptly contacted the police and explained that they had been attempting to reach a friend with a similar name. They also mentioned that the number had been saved to their phone by a friend.
SM Entertainment issued a statement in which they apologized to the individual and confirmed the removal of Renjun’s Bubble message. They also urged fans to refrain from contacting the number and assured that they would make every effort to prevent any future harm.
In April, Renjun took a temporary break from his activities due to health issues and anxiety. However, on June 11, he shared his distress on Bubble about sasaengs who were constantly following him. He even mentioned that some of them went as far as buying seats next to him on flights.
On June 20, Renjun received numerous phone calls from sasaeng fans. While doing a live broadcast, he accidentally dialed a friend’s number, mistaking it for a sasaeng’s, and unintentionally shared it on the fan communication platform, causing a stir.
The statement released by SM Entertainment states,
“Hello, this is SM Entertainment.
On June 20, Renjun mistakenly thought an unknown caller was a sasaeng and exposed the phone number on a fan communication platform. We sincerely apologize to the person affected by this exposure.
Upon learning that the affected individual had contacted the local police, we immediately conveyed our apologies to the investigating officer and took down his message. We will continue to work to prevent further harm and earnestly request that people refrain from contacting the affected individual.
Renjun is deeply reflecting on his hasty mistake, and we also apologize for our shortcomings in managing the artist. We are truly sorry for the concern caused to the affected individual and many others.”
Despite SM Entertainment’s statement attempting to address the issue, Korean netizens were still unimpressed and felt that it fell short of a genuine apology. Many also criticized the fact that it was SM Entertainment, not Renjun himself, who was handling the matter.
The idol was heavily criticized for not directly apologizing to the victim and was accused of hiding behind his company.
Several comments stated,
“Is that even an apology?”
“We don’t want to hear it from the company. We want him to apologize directly.”
“Renjun was the one who instigated the issue on that person and now his company is apologizing on his behalf. Celebrities sure consider themselves royalty.”
“This is flabbergasting.”
“He didn’t even apologize to the person personally. What the heck is this?”
“It’s not even from him. He should apologize directly.”
“Who is apologizing to who?”
“Apologize properly.”
“Wow, he’s hiding behind his company.”
