During an exhilarating Championship match in England, Watford FC’s Kwadwo Baah found himself in hot water when he received a red card for unsportsmanlike behavior moments after the final whistle. This incident unfolded on December 26, as Watford clinched a thrilling 2-1 victory at home, courtesy of Rocco Vata’s decisive penalty during stoppage time.
However, rather than the match-winning goal being the focal point, Baah’s post-match antics took center stage, drawing significant attention.
The Fallout from a Fortnite Emote
In a viral video circulating online, Baah is shown celebrating by performing the ‘Take the L’ Fortnite Emote in front of the Portsmouth section of the stadium. This iconic move involves placing an ‘L’ on one’s forehead while dancing, a gesture that did not sit well with the away fans and players.
The reaction was swift; as Portsmouth’s players and supporters pursued Baah, a tense confrontation erupted on the field. The referee intervened, issuing Baah a second yellow card for his actions, which equated to a red card, resulting in his suspension for the upcoming match.

John Mousinho, the Portsmouth manager, strongly condemned Baah’s actions, labeling the dance as “unacceptable.” He expressed, “We would never tolerate that. If one of my players did that, their future at the club would be in serious doubt.”
In defense of his player, Watford’s manager, Tom Cleverley, publicly criticized Mousinho’s remarks. “Hearing John comment on my players is disappointing,” Cleverley remarked. “The way his bench lost composure during the game cost them in the second half. Our players kept their heads, and that made the difference.”
This isn’t the first instance where the ‘Take the L’ emote has made headlines in the football world. Notably, in 2018, renowned French footballer Antoine Griezmann celebrated his penalty against Argentina during the World Cup with the same iconic dance, showcasing how video game culture continues to permeate sports.
